Movie Reviews of The Picture of Dorian Gray

Movie Review: New DVD release with commentary is announced
Summary: 5 Stars

The classic moral/horror tale is to finally be released on DVD by Warner Home Video. The story has a Jekyl and Hyde type quality with Dorian making a wish after his portrait is painted that he will remain eternally young while his portrait grows old. George Sanders plays Dorian's "friend", Lord Henry Wotton, who tempts Dorian to live a life of debauchery. Sanders was born to plays such roles. Dorian follows Wotton's advice with gusto, living a rather secret second life. All the while the portrait grows hideous in appearance, mirroring the state of Dorian's soul, while Dorian retains his youthful angelic appearance. It is a single DVD release with the following extra features:

Cast commentaries by Angela Lansbury and film historian/screenwriter Steve Haberman
1945 MGM short Stairway To Light
1945 MGM cartoon Quiet Please!
Theatrical trailer

I am particularly interested to hear Lansbury's comments on the film. She and Hurd Hatfield, the actor who portrayed Dorian, remained friends from the time they made this film until Hatfield's death in 1998. I am sure she will have many interesting things to say.

Movie Review: Please for Heavens Sake Release this on DVD!!!

I grew up with this film, please release this on DVD, THis is one of the greatest films ever made why is it not on DVD!!!

RELEASE IT PLEASE!!!!!

Movie Review: Earnest, plodding and lowbrow
Summary: 2 Stars

All the life and demonic intelligence has been drained from the story. Leave it to Hollywood.
The exaggerated grotesqueness of the portrait is a terrible lapse of directorial judgment.

Movie Review: Give me a D, Give me a V, Give me another D

What's that spell? DVD! I agree with all of the positive reviews of this film. It has been voted by the AFI as one of the top 100 thillers of all time so why not release this excellent film on DVD. Here is my vote!

Movie Review: Maintains the essence of the story
Summary: 4 Stars

"I sent my soul through the invisible,
Some letter of that after-life to spell;
And by and by my soul returned to me,
And answered, `I myself an Heaven and Hell'"
- "The Rubaiyat" Omar Khayyam

Dorian Gray, with the help of Lord Henry and Basel's painting, realizes that youthful looks are everything and proceeds (in the presence of an ancient Egyptian cat god) to sell his soul in exchange for letting the portrait grow old while he stayed youthful looking.

Although the story was slightly modified for the sake of the media and the long diatribes were cut out, Albert Lewin - Director / Writer (screenplay) left in the most important dialogs directly quoted from the book.

The movie itself is in black and white with some color plates of the portrait included.

One of the biggest surprises is that Angela Lansbury plays Dorian's love, Sibyl Vane; she looks like a little china doll as she sings "Little Yellow Bird". Later Lansbury will repeat this performance in the series "Murder She Wrote".

Even though Hurd Hatfield plays Dorian, George Sanders with his snotty sounding voice steals the show as Lord Henry Wotton, Dorian's amoral sounding friend.
