Movie Reviews of The PianoMovie Review: Gorgeousness Summary: 5 Stars
What a complete masterpiece of film art! I just saw this for the first time in a film class I'm taking. While I wish I saw it in a high-end theater, the letterboxed DVD and high-end projection system presented it very beautifully. I'm also glad I did not see it at a younger age in '93 as this would have been more difficult for me to artistically absorb. I feel sorry for anyone who sees it for the first time on a little TV with the sides of the picture cut off. The cinematography is truly wonderful. The set design, make-up, costumes and casting were exquisite, as well. The [...love] scenes look like a live recreation of an actual Michelangelo painting. The story, acting, and...Well everything is just lovely. High art.
Movie Review: Modern Masterpiece Summary: 5 Stars
Few films of the 90's come close to this one. It stars Holly Hunter in a performance which earned her the Oscar and the Best Actress prize at Cannes among many other awards. It is the story of a self imposed mute who moves to New Zealand with her small daughter to marry a landowner. Baines, a neighbor, becomes infatuated with Ada and after obtaining Ada's beloved piano, her only means of communications, he promises to give it back in exchange for sexual favors. The film is very intelligent and never exploitive. The performances are top notch, from Sam Neill to Harvey Keitel to Academy Award winner Anna Paquin, who gives one of the best performances when it comes to a child's acting.
Movie Review: Hauntingly, achingly beautiful! Summary: 5 Stars
Beautiful and brilliant are the words that come to my mind for this movie. The music still haunts me. The ocean, the music, the rain and the forest, one does feel it all. The movie is an amazing emotional rollercoaster ride. As a mute women married off to a stranger, something which must be common in those days, Ada's (Holly Hunter) piano is how talks. Her husband fails to listen to her but Keitel does! This movie by a women director explores women's perspective in relationships in such a musical, passionate, beautiful fassion that it takes your breath away. Some of the scenes in this movie are going to stay with me for a long, long time. The music too.
Movie Review: Beautiful and Haunting! Summary: 5 Stars
This is a brilliant movie. While not a 'chick flick' it does look at things from a woman's point of view but that is what makes it more intense, romantic, poetic and moving. Beautiful dream-like cinematography and score make the New Zeland coast and jungles come alive. Beautiful ensemble acting by the 4 leads especially Anna Paquina and Holly Hunter. Sam Neill is also great as the husband who slowly goes insane, and Harvey Keitel surprised me in this un-typical role for him, he's always been a great actor and this is proof of it. Beautifully filmed poetic scenes and a special 'women's touch' courtesy of Jane Campion. From a scale of 1-10 I give this movie a 9!
Movie Review: One of the great romantic films of all time Summary: 5 Stars
As an aspiring filmmaker, I was informed by a colleague to watch THE PIANO because of the unique story behind this low-budget film. When I had watched this film it literally blew me away: the acting, photography, location, and the music. The music was so haunting and beautiful, I embarked out ot purchase the soundtrack. Holly Hunter was spectacular and Anna Paquin well deserved the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1993. I recommed this film to anyone, if you are the individual who believes nothing of cinema: Watch it once. You must at least see the film in order to view the contemporary aspects of the cultural differences of the Piano.
