Movie Reviews of The PianoMovie Review: BUY IT !!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I am a pianist who spends most of his life playing or teaching the piano. A person who watches this movie without an understanding of the thoughts and emotions of a musician will not ever comprehend the numerous layers of emotion that this movie presents. The Piano meant everything to this woman. Words could never describe this concept but she did say them with her playing. ( The playing is beautifully played by Holly Hunter) One man understands these feelings while another does not have a clue about what the piano means to the woman. The reviews that people have given regarding this movie clearly reflect the feelings that these two men had about the woman. Some reviewers get it and some do not. If you are not a musician, you'll probably not appreciate this movie. If you are, you will buy this movie and watch it over and over again. The woman used her piano to speak words that could never be expressed better in any other way. I understand that totally because my words will never describe how wonderful this movie is. If you are a musician, go and buy this movie !
Movie Review: Beautiful and Otherworldly---A True Masterpiece Summary: 5 Stars
The Piano is truly a hypnotic film. It takes you away to a bleak, desolate New Zealand island where Ada McGrath, a shy woman who stopped speaking at the age of six is getting off a boat to meet her soon-to-be husband Stewart, arranged by her father, with her daughter Flora. Ada communicates through Flora, who can talk. Ada uses her old family piano as a way to express her feelings, and she needs it to remain calm and stable. The men could not get the piano up to Stewart's house, which frustated Ada immensly. Stewart's neighbor George Baines then brings it to his house after much of Ada's pleading and lets Ada play it in exchange for sexual favors. This is an extremely intriguing, beautiful, unique romantic drama that all interested in film should definitely check out. It is one of my all time favorite movies. The Piano Directed by Jane Campion Starring Holly Hunter, Ann Paquin, Harvey Keitel, and Sam Neill Rated R for moments of extremely graphic sexuality
Movie Review: Beautiful and Dark Summary: 5 Stars
After viewing this film more than a few times, I asked myself why I enjoyed this film so much. I really didn't like what I found. This film showed me what is wrong but appealing in society. I do stand by my five stars because the textures and postive aspects this movie has to offer are inumerable. Although...
A look at the "dark" notes: 1) We must as ourselves in this modern society is it right to cast a very young minor in a lead role in a movie she shouldn't be allowed to watch. 2) a sex relationship issue. The husband almost feels entitled to "rape" his wife. 3) Adultry made acceptable (nothing new) and there are others.
Pacquin and Hunter's chemistry and acting are impecable and the film deserves a positive review for this reason alone. The ironic line that delivers it all perfectly for me, When Neil(Stewart)asks Pacquin(Flora)where her mother has gone, The frustrated little girl, who has learned too much about adult relationships yells "TO HELL!"
Movie Review: Really Amazing Summary: 5 Stars
It's extremely hard to describe this movie and do it justice. As an eighteen year old who A.)Plays the piano and B.)Watches a LOT of movies, perhaps I am partial; but when I watched this, I was incredibly moved. It's hard to say what ONE thing it is about this, which means, the movie as a whole is amazing. Not only is the scenery beautiful, which I have noticed many people above have mentioned, but Holly Hunter is very rare in this. She performs so delicately as this mute woman, so eerliy silent, and having it be her CHOICE not to speak only adds to that feeling. The characters were chosen perfectly, from Anna Paquin to Harvey Keitel as a SEX symbol in this. Which is hard to believe but he pulls it off and actually is incredibly charming in this. There are parts that will give you butterflies and parts that will make you cry. It's very different. I highly recommend it, but it's not for everyone; everyone wouldn't "get" it.
Movie Review: A brilliant, moving and elusive film. Summary: 5 Stars
Campion's subtle drama about a young mute woman (Hunter) who is given a arranged marriage to New Zealand farmer (Neill) translates into an extraordinary personal story about love, communication from a woman's point of view. Hunter's beloved piano is the centre point of the film and symbolises the relationships between the characters. Like nearly all art house productions, its the acid test of how deep a person you really are, how you understand and are moved by the subtle undertones and friction between the characters like those seen in Visconti's equally brilliant "Death in Venice" and Hugh Hudson's "Chariots of Fire". The music fits the film perfectly and heightens the emotion, but the real stars are the actors, Kietel, Hunter and of course the young Paquin giving the performances of their carreers. Beautiful photography and locations add to the mystic.
