Movie Reviews of The Phantom of the Opera

Movie Review: Interesting, but not exactly up to snuff...
Summary: 3 Stars

I"ve known the story of POTA since i was 6 years old and genuinely liked it, But it wasn't until i saw teh ALW version back in December that i became obsessed. After i saw it, i went out and bought every other version of Phantom that i could get my hands on, Claude Rains was a bit pathetic (but i guess it was because he was so old), Lon Chaney was good (he REALLY looked like a Phantom) and we all know what a sensation Gerard Butler is (and INCREDIBLY sexy!) so what can i say about Robert Englund? Well teh guy WAS Freddy so i guess i should have expected some grisly stuff. For those who wish to know, there are parts in the movie that may gross you out,( i.e, when the Phantom sews skin from his murdered victims onto his own face so that he may look normal, or if that isn't enough, when he skins Joseph Buquet alive and puts him in Carlotta's closet to scare her) Anyways, if none of that doesn't bother you, then, like me, you'll at least have an interest in the movie. The main song for the picture is darkly gothic and possess a macabre charm that seems appropriate for the Phantom, and Christine is young and innocent, but lacks some charisma, all in all, the film is satisfying though a little gross.

Movie Review: More Freddie Kruger than Phantom
Summary: 3 Stars

OK this wasn't the best of adaptations of the classic Phantom of the Opera, but neither did it fail completely.

My biggest gripe with this one was that, while rich in action and gore, there was too much emphazis placed on the Phantom's murderous impulses than on the overall storyline.

It didn't help either that the producers of this film choose poor Robert Englund to play the Phantom.
It's not that Englund isn't good in the part, it's more that he seems unable to escape the Freddie Kruger persona.
Throughout the entire film I kept thinking I was watching a spin-off of yet another Nightmare on Elms Street.

I did enjoy the operatic scenes of Faust and the way they've incorperated opera culture into the film.
In essence, this is more a mixture of Freddie meets Callas than a true Phantom of the Opera film.

However, the overall result is entertaining enough and with a very nice sound score makes for good watching.

My advice, rent it. This isn't one of those films you'll want or need to watch over and over.

Movie Review: A Paradox
Summary: 3 Stars

For ALW's Phantom of the Opera fans, it's important to note that this movie bears virtually no resemblance to the musical both in, obviously, music and also in quality of acting and in overall quality of the production. This is, basically, a PotA horror story, but as far as horror stories go this one is good. Englund as the Phantom is a highly skilled actor and his rendition of the Phantom in this film is exceptionally well done. Unfortunately, however, Schoelen's abilities are far less and she gives us at best a mediocre performance as Christine Daae (Day) -- something akin to those old "B" movies.

As the critics have repeatedly stated, this is NOT the classic, immortal PotA given to us by Andrew Lloyd Webber, but it is nonetheless worth a look.

Movie Review: FREDDY MEETS THE PHANTOM
Summary: 3 Stars

Although generally panned by most critics, this 1989 version of the classic Leroux novel is quite effective, featuring a chilling performance by Freddy Kruger himself, Robert Englund. It's nicely shot in Hungary, and has some lovely music and atmosphere. The gory make-up effects are quite chilling too. This time around the Phantom is a music writer who sold his soul to the devil but had to pay a hideous price. Jill Scholen (POPCORN) is lovely as the heroine Christine, and whoever sang for her does a beautiful job. While not a classic treatment of the story, it is an effective and well done one.

Movie Review: Doesn't Follow Book at All
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought this DVD thinking, great Phantom of the Opera, scary version! Not what I got at all. I love everything Phantom of the Opera. Basically this movie just twists the whole original story and basically just takes bits and pieces it likes from the book. In the book Erik is born deformed in this the creator takes the liberty of making it that Erik sells his soul to the devil and has his face comepletely mutated. All in all it is in itself a good movie, but if someone is looking for something that follows the book, don't buy it, you will be disappointed.
