Movie Reviews of The Perfect ManMovie Review: The Boyfriend's POV Summary: 2 StarsI could be wrong, but I'm betting that most people reading this review are female.
It just seems like that kind of movie.
If you're not--that's okay--but for my review, I'm going to pretend as though I'm writing to a woman. If you're male, you can pretend along with me or find a more inclusive review. :)
Rather than recap the plot (which I'm certain other people here have), I'd rather let you know the male perspective to watching a film like this. This is what I have to say: I watched this film with my lovely fiancee; it was her turn to pick what we watched. Normally, I'm a kind of open minded guy. Maybe your boyfriend is, too. I even like "chick flicks" if they're good. This movie? Ehhh... this one wasn't that great for me. No action. No sex. No broad comedy. No suspense. But there's lots of discussion of women's difficulties in dating, and the romantic potential of different types of flowers, and there's a scene where all of the girls in the movie dance together in their socks (not sexy dance; cutesy dance). There's just not a lot here for the average guy to sink his teeth into, and a lot that will put him off.
My advice is: find some other movie for your date night together--there are lot's of romantic comedies that both sexes can enjoy (do you know whether he's seen When Harry Met Sally yet?). Watch this one alone, or with some of your girlfriends.
Movie Review: Corny but cute Summary: 3 StarsIn order to enjoy "The Perfect Man," you have to understand and be receptive to the fact that this is a teeny-bopper movie that is most likely geared toward an audience of 12-year-old girls. If you're okay with that, then you'll probably be able to enjoy this movie at least somewhat. However, if you're very anti-teen-movies, then you should probably sit this one out.
Hilary Duff gets top billing in this film over costars Heather Locklear and Chris Noth. Duff plays Holly, a high school student who is forced to deal with a slightly flakey mother, Jean (Locklear). Every time one of Jean's relationships doesn't work out (which happens quite often), she packs up her two daughters and forces them to move across the country in search of a fresh start. Eventually Holly gets sick of all the moving and she decides to put a stop to things once her family gets settled in Brooklyn. With the help of her friend Amy (Vanessa Lengies) and Amy's uncle Ben (Noth), Holly invents a secret admirer for her mother in hopes of boosting her mom's confidence and keep the family grounded in one city for more than a couple of weeks. Holly has to resort to drastic measures to keep her scheme alive and protect Jean's happiness. To make matters more complicated, Holly soon discovers that Ben is actually a perfect match for her mother, but any chance of them getting together has been ruined because of Holly's lies and deception.
There are some aspects of the film that really annoyed me. Locklear's character is incredibly wishy-washy and the movie failed to showcase her talents as an actress. Noth's character is charming, but it's a shame that he and Locklear only have about two minutes of screen time together. Also, Holly's seven-year-old sister Zoe is the freakiest little child on the planet and I cringed every time she popped up on the screen. Why did they have to cast such a creepy kid?!
Overall, "The Perfect Man" is a cute little movie. It's not really a romantic comedy at all: it's more about a mother and daughter who help each other venture down a road of self-discovery and figure out what they really want out of life.
Movie Review: Hilary Duff is lovely Summary: 5 StarsHilary Duff is a beautiful, sweet, warm-hearted, and kind girl who is a successful singer and actress and is talented and generous. She's such a lovley young girl. And she's such a good role model for girls. There's nothing wrong with this adorable blonde starlit. I love her. In the this hilarious comedy, she plays Holly, who "invents" a secret admier for her single mother who keeps dating losers. This is a light film, and it's really a mother-daughter story. I liked it and so did my sister. Hilary is talented, and she and Heather Locklear have chemistry together onscreen.
Movie Review: Hil and Heather rock! Summary: 5 StarsI love this movie and I happen to be a fan of both Hilary Duff and Heather Locklear. Both are stars in this awesome movie. Hilary plays a young teenager (Holly) who is upset with her mother constantly dating and then dumping a guy. Would YOU like to leave all your friends and move around so much??!! I totally sympathize with Holly on that issue. I don't think her mother (Heather Locklear) truly listened to her daughter's feelings. She was just being a selfish stuck up mom. I like the fact, that in this movie, daughter teaches mother. In other words Hilary teaches Heather how to act and BE a mom. Also, this is the best love story and the content is appropriate for children. Awesome movie. Best Hilary movie yet! Loved it! See for yourself cuz this movie will not make you sorry you watched it!
Movie Review: Somewhat less than perfect Summary: 4 StarsThis is the second time I've watched this movie (I like to watch a movie twice to get a bigger picture), and as much as I hate to admit it, I really liked it.
This is a really sweet movie. Heather Locklear is great, and while I'm generally not a fan of Hilary Duff, she's not so bad here, but I would've liked to have seen the little sister more often, which probably would have added a little more comedic relief if the writers had played their cards right.
Either way, there's great chemistry between all the actors, which is part of what makes this movie so great, you really believe they're a family.
Overall, this movie is fun and entertaining, it's a great way to spend a saturday or sunday afternoon. While it's not exactly oscar material (then again, after this year's oscars, who knows...), but it's still a movie that's worth seeing. It's a guaranteed good time.
But while this movie is seemingly sweet, when you think about it, what at the same time makes this movie entertaining, fun and builds the drama to come, also gives this movie a somewhat creepy and relatively scary turn.
I know that when there's these types of mother-daughter relationships, they're extremely close and become best friends (Gilmore Girls balances it out perfectly), here the daughter kind of crosses a certain line, actually become her mother's boyfriend and having intimate e-mail conversations with her, which for me is a little disturbing. Also, you could ask why Locklear doesn't appear more concerned that some guy fell in love with her within a week and pretty much stalks her, and you could ask yourself why she doesn't seem more suspicious of the fact that he's never actually shown his face to her (sending a picture isn't really a great way to get validation that he's not a total psycho)
There's also the underlying message that the internet isn't extremely safe either...the daughter passing as the man who's in love with the mother...message : anyone can pretend to be someone else.
Also what surprised me with this movie is how forgiving the mother is, it didn't seem too realistic.
Despite all of this, if you don't look too much into it and don't question the whole "perfect man" concept thrown in, I think you're in for a good time with this (relatively) innocent movie about mother-daughter relationships, which is rare in today's movies.
