Movie Reviews of The People vs. Larry Flynt (Special Edition)Movie Review: Thoroughly EnGROSSing, must see! Summary: 5 StarsI have watched this movie multiple times and have always found it to be a fascinating portrayal of colorful characters. Larry Flynt, played convincingly by Woody Harrelson, and his real life brother Brett Harrelson, playing brother of Larry in the movie, was a nice touch. I think that added to the believabilty of the portrayals too. The most fascinating in a movie award goes to.....Courtney, I LOVE you in this role. Never have I seen an actress play a role so convincingly as musician and actress Courtney Love played the Althea Flynt character. She was no less than mesmerizingly wild, beautiful, neurotic and one step away from self destruction from the beginning of the film. Then once she joins Larry in taking his pain medication after the assasination attempt outside the courtroom paralyzes him forever...she spirals into oblivion so genuinely played, you can't wait for her scenes. In my opinion, she makes this movie achieve greatness.Ex-NYC mayor Rudy Guiliani's ex-wife, Donna Hanover, plays a great role as evangelist sister of ex-president Jimmy Carter, Ruth Carter-Stapleton. She introduces Larry to the re-born life, only to lose him again after he is shot, and the epiphany he experienced through her mentoring, is lost.Edward Norton is also wonderful as Larrys long suffering lawyer. When they go up against Jerry Falwell in court, Woody is truly hilarious as Larry at his most ornery. All in all, a very entertaining movie that the prudish, or devout won't care for...but they know who they are, and probably wouldn't be watching this film anyway. For the rest of us, even if we don't like the man, or what he stands for, we will be entertained by this biopic.
Movie Review: SUCCEEDING AGAINST ODDS Summary: 4 StarsWoody Harrelson gives a credible and entertaining performance here as porn king Larry Flynt. Ed Norton is also excellent (as usual) as Flynt's busy and much beleaguered lawyer. I have more doubts about the performance of Courtney Love because she has not done enough other acting to compare her performance to. Many people would argue that this performance was not much of a stretch from her everyday life perhaps (not that anyone of us would know). Many would say this was her acting out how her life might have been had she continued spiraling into heroin addiction. But none of this speculation is fair. Her performance within the context of the film was perfect for what the film needed. She played the wife of Flynt, Althea, with convincing and reckless abandon, and her decline and eventual demise is also well played. The story, well, the story of Flynt is well known, and the film will tell the tale once more if curious. Whether or not you love or hate Flynt, the film is an interesting look at how he got started and how he succeeded against the odds.
Movie Review: Open-minded Summary: 4 StarsThis film is only for the open-minded and honest. If you are a prude, don't watch it. Edward Norton as Alan Issacman, in my opinion, was the best portrayal of a character. Courtney Love's Althea was seductively charismatic in the beginning of the film. Milos Forman is a great director and I absolutely love this movie. I didn't like the fact that feminists were protesting the film, calling it a "white-wash" of Flynt's career. But who cares? They get mad at anything. I suggest you recommend this film to your close friends and relatives, maybe even distant ones. (Not moral Christians).
Movie Review: Excellent Film Summary: 4 StarsI bought this movie not to long ago and think it is excellent. Great performances by Woody Harrelson, Courtney Love, and Edward Norton. A must see for supporters of our first amendment rights and open minded people. Peoply need to open their minds and quit seeing Larry Flynt the man and see Larry Flynt crusader for first amendment rights.
Movie Review: Interesting twist Summary: 5 StarsDo you know that Larry Flynt himself plays in the movie as Judge Morrissey (Cincinnati Court) ? That's Milos Forman's trademark.
