Movie Review: Absolutely classic.

The DVD is a bit of a disappointment, there being no extra features of any sort, but the show still holds up a quarter century after it first aired. Sort of a dry run for PWH's later kids' show, but much funnier and definitely for the grown-ups. Phil Hartman's Captain Carl steals the show.Movie Review: Pee-wee is simply the best!

Ah, Pee-wee Herman. What can be said about Pee-wee Herman? Comic genius? No. That's an understatement. Nothing can describe Pee-wee Herman, nor can anything prepare someone for the comedic force that is Pee-wee Herman. The Pee-wee Herman Show ran for some five sell-out months at The Roxy in Los Angeles. This DVD consists of HBO's hour long special showcasing the talent and genius of Pee-wee. From Pee-wee's Bag-of-Tricks, to Jambi the Genie, the musical salute, and an educational film on Mr. Bungle, this hour-long special is so jam-packed and fast paced it seems to pass within minutes. And you actually get to see the Pee-wee Herman character in an early form when his voice was even more child-like and he exhibited even more childish mannerisms. Hard to believe, but true. You can see a difference between this Pee-wee and the Pee-wee's Big Adventure Pee-wee. It's amazing how this character evolved into a mass media pheonomenon. If you even remotely like Pee-wee's Playhouse or either of the two Pee-wee movies or one of his many appearances in other films, you will love this special. This is an off-the-wall, brilliant comedy piece. I have been a sometimes fan of the Playhouse, and I was surprised at how imaginative and enjoyable the Tim Burton/Paul Rubens movie creation was, but this original HBO special really takes the cake. It's as if you took that internal kid and allowed everything to come out, including the dirty stuff. It's all tongue-firmly-in-cheek, and all the surrounding characters are brilliantly played in addition to Rubens odd PeeWee creation.
Anyway, a friend had introduced this to me on VHS. Now that it's on DVD, I plan to purchase it immediately.

I remember watching this on the comedy central network when it used to show this about 8 or 9 years ago. I remember laughing myself silly at the "Mr. Bungle" video.
I hope this DVD is as good as the show!!
