Movie Reviews of The Pee-Wee Herman Show - Live at the Roxy Theater

Movie Review: Brings me back to my childhood...
Summary: 5 Stars

I remember watching this so much when I was younger..I love the part where the two people who are BBQ'ing start singing!!!

Movie Review: A comedic genius at work.
Summary: 5 Stars

Things I liked about this performance. The characters, starting with Pee Wee all the way to Jombie. The story, about a boy who wanted to fly.
And finally the quirky world Pee Wee lives in, contained on a stage.
This performance is like an unedited version of the "Playhouse" on TV. Tongue-in-cheek humor, adult overtures similar to the old Looney Tunes. Very imaginative and good stuff. Thanks Paul!

Movie Review: A gem from the vaults
Summary: 4 Stars

I never saw PWH in its original incarnations so this live show [now nearly 30 years old] was all new to me. It has a strong theatrical feel which I enjoyed--all the cast worked hard to keep the energy high. The gags are pretty timeless and the raunch factor is about minus 2. Pathos was on offer via the presence of Phil Hartmann. My spouse, who had requested it as a gift, waxed nostalgic and appreciative.

Movie Review: How can you NOT like PeeWee?!
Summary: 5 Stars

The PeeWee Herman Show strikes a great balance--entertaining for kids because of its zany antics, over-the-top characters, and bright visuals; entertaining for adults because of the double entendre humor and "oh-my-gosh-is-that?-yes-it-is!" guest stars. PeeWee's persona was the Mr. Rogers for a new era (although not in his personal life, unfortunately), with good life and interpersonal lessons presented in subtle yet attention-getting ways. I watch during my workouts--no matter how many times I've seen an episode, I laugh like crazy!

Movie Review: Has its ups and downs. Sometimes you find yourself forced to laugh
Summary: 1 Stars

There must have been a laugh track to this HBO special, or the audience was high or something, because they were laughing at almost every little thing Pee-Wee did It was surprising to see a stage-version of what would essentially become Pee-Wee's Playhouse, with more adult situations (like Pee-Wee looking up a girl's skirt with mirrors on his shoes, to which the girl notices and says to his dismay, "I'm not wearing panties") Some of the characters from the TV show are here, including a raunchy Captain Carl, a somewhat psychotic Miss Yvonne, and Jambi!!!!!!!!!!!! Some of the antics were only mildly amusing, but there was nothing that was laugh out loud funny in the entire show. It's amazing to see these people in the crowd laugh uproariously at what you would have to force yourself to laugh at, or just snort a bit.

All in all, it was fun to see Pee-Wee's Playhouse with an adult spin to it, but it wasn't at all very funny
