Movie Reviews of The Party

Movie Review: Thirty years before Rowan Atkinson there was Peter Sellers
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a seriously funny movie. It's very much reminiscent of something you'd see Mr. Bean get himself into - but "The Party" was filmed 30 years earlier! It's over the top - and just when you thought it couldn't get any more whackier, in comes the painted elephant and everything ramps up another notch (you just have to see it to understand ...)

Peter Sellers makes it all work, of course, but the supporting characters are all perfect for thier parts. Reportedly, much of the action was improvised on set - which gives the overall production a very enjoyable feeling of spontaneity.

Although the setting is quintesential late 60's, the humor is timeless. I think "The Party" ranks up there with "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World"!

Movie Review: Another Great One to Mystify Your So-Called Friends
Summary: 5 Stars

Aside from Das Boot, Down by Law, and The Deer Hunter, I don't think I own any movies from the 70's. Yes, I'm sure I've missed a couple, but not by much. Peter Sellers is fantastic in the film, giving an Indian slant to a humorous presentation.

The gags are thoughtful and very universal (see if any of the situations have applied to you). The Party gives a very high laugh factor without having to commit to a genre or time period. Anyone who's tired of the school of obvious laughs (Clap Please) should enjoy this. Warning- the viewer is responsible for detecting humorous moments and shall not be compelled, forced, or otherwise tipped off when something funny has happened (and this occurs frequently).

Movie Review: Sellers goes Harold Lloyd
Summary: 5 Stars

Most about this hilarious movie has already been said, but check out, to appreciate even more, Harold Lloyds not very well known movie "Movie crazy" (1932) - "The Party" is actually some kind of a 60ties remake of this Harold Lloyd-classic, which was a flop at the time of its release. I say a "kind of" a remake, because it's more a Tati-like meditation on themes from "Movie crazy" (the floating shoe!), following more or less the story-line, but working sometimes with funny oppositions: when the producer's party in "Movie crazy" gets mixed up by white mice, it's an elephant showing up at "The party".

I'm sure that anyone loving Peter Sellers will enjoy Harold Lloyd in one of his last movies, maybe his best one.

Movie Review: Birdie Num-Nums...
Summary: 5 Stars

The most hilarious movie starring Peter Sellers is the Party. Film actor Hrundi V. Bakshi from India accidentally blows up the whole set in a movie (looks like they are filming "Gunga Din" almost) and is told he is "through" in Hollywood forever. Until he gets put accidentally on a dinner party list held by the movie's producer. The result is just as hilarious as the beginning of the movie; Hrundi can't help but screw everything up, spill something, tip something over, damage something or make some sort of funny social faux-pas at the dinner table.

Peter Sellers really outdid himself when he did The Party. It's sheer comic genius, not to be missed.

Movie Review: It is a 60's Classic. It is a must buy and enjoy The Party!
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie is a classic comedy of the 60's. It is very subtle. It is a funny fine portrait of the 60's Hollywood life style with a hint of 60's movie's industry by characterization. But pay attention to details: his Indian accent, the red socks and white shoes, the jazz band that never stops when house is soaped, the `General' that gives up the whole thing by saying "Save the paintings!(not this one you idiot, just the good stuff!)" and many, many others. "The Russians are coming...."? Are you kidding me? Hahaha! "Go naked over his bum..."? Hahaha

And at the end, he's has to go? He's got to feed APU?!! Come on.....

A must buy.
