Movie Reviews of The Party

Movie Review: Variations on the Theme of Mayhem
Summary: 5 Stars

Parts of THE PARTY always bring tears to my eyes from uncontrollable laughter-for example, when Sellars, entranced by the effects of his own voice on an accidentally-activated oscilloscope, inadvertently broadcasts his "Birdy Num Nums" and peculiar squawks to the party guests over an in-house intercom. This is slapstick improvisational humor at its finest.

On the day of one our recent school proms, when student attendance was at an all-time low, I subjected my seniors to this Sixties gem. Their response was similar to current adolescents' reactions to the Marx Brothers: unutterable, unaffected boredom (with a few exceptions on the part of some brighter kids with open minds and quirky senses of humor). With polite disdain and quiet inattention, the kids seemed baffled by my guffaws and howls. Is humor truly so contextual? Am I amused only because I grew up in the Sixties and loved Sellars in his Pink Panther flicks?

I'd prefer to think that anyone with a sensitive funnybone and love of irony would find this Blake Edwards/Peter Sellars collaboration a pure delight.

Movie Review: Elvis' Favorite Commedy
Summary: 5 Stars

The Party is extremely funny situational commedy with the wealthy Hollywood Power Players gently liking Peter Sellers, the uninvited Indian, Sweet - non-star- with the Indian actor slowly destroying the Party, The House, and The Establishment. The Music, the Dancing, the Setting and the hilarious dinner scenes plus opther slapstick scenes are terrific works of cinema genious. No wonder Elvis loved this film so much he fles in friends for Party nights with Peanut Butter and Banana sandwiches...

Movie Review: Funniest movie I ever saw!
Summary: 5 Stars

The Party is one of my favorite all time movies. When I first saw Peter Sellers in this comedy, (the early 70's), I laughed so hard I cried. This is one of the best comedies ever made with a beautifully understated performance by Peter Sellers, playing an aspiring inept actor from India, who mistakenly gets invited to a huge Hollywood party. Also an incredibly funny performance by steve Franken, as a waiter who keeps getting drunk through the party. He is laugh out loud funny as he staggers around the room full of Hollywood bigwigs in a total stupor.
Many viewings of this great movie do not dull its comic genius. The famous "Birdie Num Num," is often heard in many forums.
"I'm no your shuga!" is another great comedic line from the movie.
The party is strangely timeless, the outfits don't look outdated and the Hollywood house would still fetch a fortune. The film is also very innocent: no drugs jokes (sneezing into the coke) no smut and no sex! My only question...why did peter Sellers have to die so young?

Movie Review: A Joy to Watch!
Summary: 5 Stars

I've watched this movie about a thousand times and I have never get bored of doing it, it's just so hilariously funny, that I could go on watching it over and over again, forever.

Peter Sellers, the master of comedy himself, stars as Hrundi Bakshi, in this un-timely film. He's invited by mistake to a lavish dinner party and from then on, all goes wrong, with the aid of a drunken waiter, played with great comedy skill by Steve Franken. Pretty french actress and singer Claudine Longet, plays a basically nice & good natured starlet, who's taken to the party by a lecherous producer (Gavin McLeod), eventually befriending our hero.

Lots of gags in this sarcastic and ironic look at Hollywood parties and its characters (the fading cowboy star, the italian/latin bombshell, the starlets, the highbrow senator's wife, the affected phony princess, the stuffy party hostess, etc.)

You must watch the dvd, the film being shown in its original widescreen format is a must-see, `cos you won't miss any details of what's going on!

Movie Review: Now... This is COMEDY
Summary: 5 Stars

When I think of comedy, the first movie that cross over my mind is THE PARTY. Why? Well, if you have to ask me why, obviously you ain't seen this film.
I can't count the times I have seen it as much as I can't get tired of see it again and again.
THE PARTY is a perfect example of what comedy means. Let me put it this way: THE PARTY is cool, groovy, absolutely-funny, absolutely-sixties, it has one of the most perfect comedy-timming in movie history and it's... how can I say it? The Party-movie ever made!!
Applause for Mancini and his excellent score! Applause for Blake Edwards in one his most perfect works, a state of grace!
Wait! The best for dessert... Here comes PETER SELLERS in his funniest performance. Simply fabuolous.
