Movie Reviews of The OutsiderMovie Review: A western that leaves you thinking Summary: 5 Stars
I caught the very end of the movie on Showtime. It intrigued me enough to buy the DVD; could not find it to rent first. It was money well spent. It is several cuts above average westerns and in it's way, even the movie "The Unforgiven". Naomi Watts gives a strong and compelling preformance as Rebbecca Yoder, a devoted Amish widow and ferociously protective mother. The belief that 'God will protect us' is her foundation. Tim Daly gives an outstanding preformance as Johnny Gault, the wounded shootist she takes in and nurses back to health after he wonders into her field. He can speak volumes with a quirked eyebrow and expressive eyes. It is obvious that Mr. Daly spent time getting into shape for this role as he is really cut. His acting in this role raises questions as to why he is so under appreciated as a leading man.(emphasis on Man, not the latest young pretty boy) His character, Johnny Gault, is a pragmatic realist about the way the world works. The attraction of Mr. Gault to Mrs. Yoder is not without cost, because as in any good western, right and wrong and good and evil must be delt with. The ending will leave you thinking. It is one of my very favorite movies and I hope others will enjoy it too.
Movie Review: Smokin' chemistry, great characters, good story Summary: 5 Stars
This movie was terrific. I can't say enough good things about the acting and chemistry between the two stars. My husband fell in love with Naomi Watts and I was enthralled with Tim Daly's portrayel of Johnny Gault. It's way above your average and better than those Tom Selleck & Robert Duvall westerns we've seen on TNT of late (Lonesome Dove excepted). Naomi Watts is endearing and compelling as Rebbecca Yoder. But whew Tim Daly cranks up the heat giving an outstanding preformance as Johnny Gault, the wounded "bad boy" shootist she takes in. He is one hot man. When he put his hands on Watts for the first time, I thought I'd melt on the spot. Mr. Daly is seriously under-appreciated as a leading man. The good ending will leave you thinking. It is now one of my favorite TV movies. I agree with the reviewer who wrote, If the devil himself were to come to earth to seduce a woman, he would be Tim Daly as Johnny Gault. Tall, dark, handsome and smokin' hot! And the men will love Naomi Watts in this. If you enjoyed this movie, I also recommend "LOVE COMES SOFTLY" with Katherine Heigl & Dale Midkiff. Bravo to the makers of such entertaining television movies!!!
Movie Review: The Outsider Summary: 5 Stars
I loved this tender love story between an Amish plain widow and a sought after "bad boy" gunman. I originally saw it on the Hallmark channel, and didn't know that the network had edited it for sexuality and bad language. I had missed the first 1/2 hour of the movie and bought it to see the rest. I was disappointed when my DVD showed the scenes that Hallmark tastefully deleted. There were some "G.D.'s" that I had not heard the first time viewing it, and far more of the sex scene I could have lived without. I do appreciate the fact that Hollywood did show that there is penalty for the sin of fornication.
This movie may have gotten more viewing had it been made for a family audience. The unity of family between the Amish in the backwoods was well portrayed. Their dependence upon God was a witness to the world, and only slightly made to look foolish. The thing I found hard to believe is that she would leave her community for an unbeliever - even if he did look as pretty as Tim Daly! Hope that didn't ruin the ending, but I thought you should know before you invest in it.
Movie Review: excellent adaptation Summary: 5 Stars
This movie is based on the book The Outsider by Penelope Williamson. The book was excellent, and the movie is a faithful and well-rendered adaption of the story. Amish mother and widow Rachel is getting by, missing her husband and trying to keep their ranch going with the help of her young son, but generally content with her life. Then gunslinger Johnny shows up. He's wounded and needs help, and she nurses him back to health. To pay her back he agrees to stay and help out on the farm during their busy season. The two fall in love despite her strict religion and society and his difficult past -- a past that comes back to haunt them all.
Williamson's characters seem very real, and you want these two strikingly different people to find happiness together. The acting in the film is excellent, the portrayal of life on the frontier realistic. It's a great Western whether or not you're a fan of romance.
Movie Review: Hubba hubba Summary: 5 Stars
Why isn't Tim Daly doing more? I tried to watch "Nine" but it never really took off (and now it's canceled). He is gorgeous. His eyes say it all. Yes, the "bod" is amazing but we all know it takes more than muscle tone to play a role. Naomi Watts is perfect for her role. I was surprised to find out the movie was filmed in Australia but, no matter, it makes for a beautiful setting. I have one question about an entirely different matter--why does Keith Carradine's character's son have a rifle toward the end of the movie? Aren't they supposed to be against violence? And couldn't we say that his having a gun is the reason he's shot? I saw this as the only flaw in the entire production. (If I'm wrong, I hope someone writes in and sets the record straight.) Anyway, I'll conclude by saying Tim Daly, especially in this movie, really melts my butter. I hope he has another project in the works and soon!
