Movie Reviews of The Outsider

Movie Review: THE SHOOTIST, AND THE LADY! I LOVED THIS LOVE STORY!
Summary: 5 Stars

I loved this movie! I love western love stories, with the handsome leading men, who become hero's to the beautiful leading ladies! This is a perfect love story.

I think Tim Daly who plays the outlaw (Johnny Gault), is so handsome! Wow! In this movie, I so loved, the pretty outdoor scenes, and Rebecca's pretty log cabin, with all those beautiful, colorful quits, that was on the beds.

This story is about a beautiful, young widow, who is a Quaker, her name is Rebecca (Naomi Watts), and her son is BenJo, they live alone, on their isolated farm, tending their sheep, and they come upon a badly, gunshot, wounded outlaw(Johnny Gault), bleeding and hurt, in the snow. And Rebecca helps him, and in return, Johnny ends up protecting, and helping her, and her son, from the men who killed her husband. These men killed her husband because they wanted her husband's land. Johnny and Rebecca fall in love, and Johnny sees a side of life, that he never had a chance to belong to before. And Rebecca was afraid to love Johnny, because of her strict life as a Quaker, and because her father, and brothers, who are also Quakers, they considered Johnny a outsider.

My favorite scenes in the movie was when, Johnny the tough outlaw was holding the baby lamb! And the gentle way, that he was with Rebecca's son. I loved the scene where Rebecca was shaving Johnny's beard. Johnny ended up really loving Rebecca, and she him, they truly belonged together, even with their differences in their lives!

This is the very first DVD that I ever owned, I got it a couple of years ago! I have watched this movie many times! This movie is for all us romantic ladies out there, who especially love handsome tough cowboys, who have hearts of pure gold!

Movie Review: You might want to read the novel for the back story!
Summary: 5 Stars

The ominious black dvd cover almost made me bypass this one by. However, I am a great fan of Naomi Watts so I decided to watch it figuring I could always eject. This is two movies in one-a violent western and a charming romance-but it works really well.

This movie owes its fish-out-of-water plot to the 1950s Angel and the Badman which first recounted the story as a gunslinger and a Quaker lass. The plot reappears in the early 1980s as Witness with a big city cop and a lovely Amish widow and son. The Outsider has a beautiful Amish widow Rebecca Yoder(Watts), whose husband is murdered by cattleman who want their land, who develops feelings for a gravely wounded "shootist" named Johnny Gault (Tim Daly) whom she nurses him back to health to the disapproval of almost everyone.

The bearded and very sexy Daly nails his character perfectly, Watts is wonderful and their chemistry is just great! The movie is filmed on location in New Zealand which passes nicely for Montana (ironically Australian Peter Weir came to the US to direct Witness).

The movie compelled me to read the Penelope Williamson novel. Overall the movie is better edited than the book. However (and these are minor quibbles), there some plot omissions that in my opinion would add richness to the film. The viewer never learns the circumstances that led up to Gault being severely wounded and stumbling up on the Yoder farm in the first place! The movie's finale has been motified somewhat and I think that the novel gives a stronger character arc to the shootist. I am sure the plot will be recycled again, its a sure winner.

Movie Review: Lovely Western romance, first rate acting from Tim Daly!
Summary: 5 Stars

I just happened upon this movie while looking for something to watch while I exercised on my stepping machine. Needless to say, I was so captivated by the movie that when my exercise hour was up, I just collapsed on the bed and watched this wonderful love story!

Wounded gunslinger Johnny Gault stumbles onto Amish widow Rebecca Yoder's farm. She nurses him back to health, tries to redeem him and falls in love! Sounds corny, and I guess it is a little bit, but what's wrong with that? There is a storyline about cattlemen wanting to run the Amish out of town in order to have their free grazing lands back, but it is primarily a love story between these two totally different people and how they make it work. This movie made me an instant Tim Daly fan! I used to think of him only as the cute one from "Wings", but now I am watching any movie he is, or has been, in! His acting is superb and subtle, and he is very nice to look at! Naomi Watts is lovely, but once in a while she has a goofy look on her face, as if she's not quite sure how she should react in a certain scene. But, these are small, picky things that shouldn't in any way detract from this wonderful movie. After you watch it, get the book! The book has a couple of storylines that were omitted from the film (for the sake of brevity)and Johnny Gault (who is Johnny Cain in the book with Rachel Yoder)is a somewhat darker character. The ending of the book is a bit more powerful, and if you can read it without crying, you're a tougher person than I!

Movie Review: Great Movie
Summary: 5 Stars

I rented this movie in VHS format a few years ago at Blockbuster. I could never find it again after that first time. I finally decided to look for it and found it on DVD at Amazon. I'm almost positive that some parts have been cut. It doesn't detract from the film if you haven't seen the original. One example is the selection of a horse by the main character, Johnny, and the young boy. I thought there were other horses in that selection process. I keep trying to remember what else there is missing from this version. In any event, the movie is excellent and will grab your heart strings. It may be classified as a "chic" movie, but there is nothing feminine about Tim Daly's character, Johnny. He is tough as nails but will light your fire and soften your heart at the same time. As you may guess from the title, Johnny is the gunslinger and the outsider who finds himself in a tight-knit religious community with their own strict rules and regulations. The crux of the film is the perceived problem of the sheep herder versus the cattle rancher. Naomi Watts is the heroine who faces her own challenges and tragedies. To say more would give away the story, which is one you will want to see rather than hear. I recommend this movie and give it 5 stars. But for me personally, if there is an uncut version out there, I'd rather have it.

Movie Review: Great romantic western, extremely well-done!
Summary: 5 Stars

I highly recommend this DVD. I thought it was just excellent in how it was made---the story line, the acting, the believable and "likable" actors portraying the main charactors, the music, the photography, scenery, everything!! (Tim Daly in my opinion was the PERFECT actor for his part!! He was wonderful!!)

I first saw this movie on the Hallmark Channel catching only the last half of the movie. I just knew I had to see the whole thing and was happy to see I could get the DVD from Amazon.

What I especially liked about it was it showed the charactors to be more than one-dimensional. The Amish who were very God-loving were also at times mean-spirited and narrow-minded and the "Outsider" who was a worldly-wise and "sinful" cold blooded killer was shown to have traits of kindness and gentleness, (especially brought out by the sincere, sweet, kind, and loving Amish woman.)

The book, which closely follows the movie, "fleshes out" the charactors a little bit more and covers in depth some peripheral charactors more (not a plus in my view). I would also recommend the book to anyone who likes the movie.

All-in-all, a very entertaining and enjoyable movie especially for those who enjoy movies about "the West" in the late 1800's with a good romance thrown in!
