Movie Reviews of The Outlaw Josey Wales

Movie Review: Now spit.
Summary: 5 Stars

Dittos, Konedog. Richard Slotkin, who writes fat books about the mythic West, could hardly have said it better.

It's 30 years since Eastwood fired the main man (the director who had turned Tom Wolfe's escellent Right Stuff into a wrong-headed two-headed aborted monster of a movie) and hired himself to bring Josie Wales to term. Big pieces of Wales don't withstand scrutiny, especially that big bonfire blazing in a downpour or all those tracks Wales & Watie leave as they scamper up the dunes, but the totality of the movie is so compelling that I willingly suspend disbelief. Scrutiny subsides before the complete package of great characters, great character, and one of the most aagnificent moments on film: howling Comancheros have plundered a piano from a wagon, hauled it out and heaved it overboard. Howls and a dissonant din from the bushwhacked piano rise and recoil, and then everything stops except Comanchero eyes seeing Locke, and her eyes seeing them.

If Eastwood has done anything half as good since 1976, I missed it. Unforgiven was almost unforgivable and unwatchable. Mystic River was vicious and vile. Josie Wales is Clint Eastwood's monument. Five stars and two thumbs up.

Movie Review: The Masterpiece Josey Wales
Summary: 5 Stars

Clint Eastwood surpasses the realm of just a "good classic western film," here he has managed to create a masterpiece. Eastwood himself refers to this as one of his most important films, following the equally great "Unforgiven."
The 1976 film opens with Josey's family being violently slaughtered, sending the Outlaw into a remarkable wrath of revenge. Without giving too much away, the road to death soon becomes the road to redemption.
Eastwood and company incorporated wonderful two handed gunplay, laugh out loud humor, magnificent character development and overall a masterpiece that will stand the test of time.
The remastered edition is a God sent. The anamorphic widescreen has never looked better. The Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack brings new life to the picture.
I personally loath the Warner Bros. snap cases, but the Clint Eastwood Collection is well worth the frustration. Eastwood's films deserve so much better, such as the treatment of the 2004 3 Disc set release of the dark and spectacular "Mystic River."
The Outlaw Josey Wales throws away the formula of the standard "Western." Maybe that's why it's charm and the power and patience of Eastwood is undeniable.

Movie Review: Josey Wales is AMAZING!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Definitely a great Post-Civil War Western and one of my personal favorites, The Outlaw Josey Wales, brings to the screen heavyweight Hollywood star Clint Eastwood in one of his best performances ever!
It is the story of a poor Missouri farmer and former confederate soldier that sees the people he cares about betrayed, subsequently becoming an outlaw following the end of the Civil War. On the run and with the Union army and his former leader-turned-traitor (a scalawag) on his heels, he finds a new life in the wilderness looking after those that cannot protect themselves, all the while coming closer to avenging his loved ones.
He and the rest of the cast, have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are exceptional to say the least. The plot, the setting, the dialogues, the battles and the costumes are all wonderful, making this movie one of the best of its kind.
The Outlaw Josey Wales is a movie about honor, bravery, and heroes from a time long gone.
For other wonderful Post-Civil War Westerns I strongly recommend Major Dundee and The Undefeated.
The Outlaw Josey Wales is definitely a must-see movie for the Western enthusiast!

Movie Review: Endeavor to Persevere
Summary: 5 Stars

This is not only one of the greatest westerns of all time, it is one of the greatest movies of all time. Not only is it authentic (as opposed to realistic), entertaining, well acted and well directed, but it contains a barrel-full of indispensible advice that is applicable to everyday life, such as:

"when the goin' gets tough, and it looks like your gonna lose, that's when you gotta get mean... I mean plum mad dog mean. 'cause if you don't then you neither win nor live" or something like that.

There are great tactical lessons to be learned from the "Missoura Boat Ride", the singing Ferryman, Fletcher, and the various Indian characters:

"and when we had thought about it long enough, we declared war..."

This movie provides enough one-liners and memorable quotes to rival any shakespearean play.

I can only echo the sentiments of other reviewers and add that I have watched this DVD dozens of times and it still doesn't get old. American citizens, and southerners in particular, should be required to watch this movie at least once a year.

Movie Review: Eastwood Is The One And Only Josey Wales
Summary: 5 Stars

The Outlaw Josey Wales,1976, directed by Clint Eastwood is by far Eastwood's best western, nobody could've played the outlaw better, reminiscent of the dollars trilogy, yet a more mature, polished and relaxed Clint Eastwood and a good solid cast surrounding the set, Chief Dan George gives a natural stand up performance as Lone Watie, but mostly it is Clint Eastwood's show as Josey Wales, packing two pistols that bring to life or death some true actual events occuring during the Civil War pertaining to guerilla warfare, Union jayhawkers and Confederate bushwackers, as Josey Wales rides with the infamous bloody Bill Anderson eliminating every Kansas redleg that stands in the way of interfering justice and revenge Wales is searching for on his long and dangerous journey, packed with non-stop action, The Outlaw Josey Wales fits the bill in the hardcore western tradition portrayed in the traditional Eastwood fashion. This DVD is excellent quality remastered with a new digital tranfer and new audio sound, 16x9 widescreen.
