Movie Reviews of The Other Side of Heaven

Movie Review: Very Good
Summary: 5 Stars

To say this movie is boring because "The Other Side of Heaven" is not action filled is a shame. Sex, blood, and gore are not required for a good movie to leave an emotional impact. Why does the movie industry push 90 percent of its movies as rated R content into theatres? Is it the movie job to reflect the content people desire? It is interesting how movies have moved from explaining complex relationships too action and violence. Action and violence is like an emotional drug and often drives for more explicit scenes, more dramatic gore, and increased levels of violence.

This movie is clean, G-rate quality. The movie contains a rich series of relationship, tells an interesting story, and gives the viewer a deeper insight into the LDS culture. The movie is about moral courage and righteousness. I like the movie better than "Gods Army", "Single Ward", "the RM", and "Brigham City". This film was excellent.

The story was inspiring. Elder John Groberg spends three years in Tonga; he builds a LDS church; he travels between islands to teach; he learns about the importance of paperwork and approval; and he wins over the hearts of the people.

The movie humor was funny. Elder Groberg is invited to speak too the branch. As a new missionary, Elder Groberg struggles with the language and mistakenly replaces one word with another. The audience laughs and the branch President silence them with sharp tones and tells the group to be silent. One of the most touching portions of the movie illustrates Elder Groberg learning the Tongan language by comparing a Tongan scripture with and English Scripture. He studies from sunrise to sunset until exhaustion. Elder Groberg companion has faith in him and brings food daily.

This is a story of simply amazing faith and devotion. A boy fall from a tree; he seems near death; the boy's father asks Elder Groberg to heal him; and Elder Groberg works with the boy and heals him. The boy's father eventual becomes one of Elder Groberg's counselors. Christian rivaly centralizes on Elder Groberg and his companion one night as they are walking home when an angry mob sent by the preacher tries to rough them. They are saved by an inactive alchololic Tongan member who remembers that missionaries from his childhood were kind to him and because of this kindness, he should protect the Elders. Elders win over this man and the hugh Tongan gets a hair cut, stops drinking, and smoking then returns to church. The man changes his life style.

The unique Tongan culture becomes a real test for Elder Groberg. The movie includes a James Mitchner "Hawaii" insight into Tongan cultural exploits, as some of the village girls join with a merchant captain and crew only later too be beaten and cast out to the shore to die. In the second part, Elder Groberg is requested to sire a white baby with one of the native daughter of high repute. One of the island girls offers her self sexually and requests they make love. The mother thinks Elder Groberg is too good and selfish; the mother insists on marriage is not necessary telling him that a child would be good enough. Elder Groberg explains to the mother, he has promised himself to Jean and his love is eternal for her.

Missionaries are under strict moral codes of chastity and Elder Groberg teaches the mother he is saving himself for marriage with Jean. The mother tells him, she will not speak anymore on this matter again. As Elder Groberg completes his mission, the village comes out to sing "God be with you until we meet again"; the girl has since married and has a small baby. Elder Groberg tells her to remmember eternal love upon which the girl nods in approval. In the third part, Elder Groberg must convince one of his counselors to stop barter his daughter for sexual favors in exchange for favorable business terms with one of the local merchants and chastise his counselor with encouragement to set a better example.

The movie has a romance. John is a trumpet player in a swing band and during the dance Jean shows up with another boy. John competes with the boy in a dance off with John rushing Jean outside and locking everyone in. There is a swing nearby and a full moon overhead. John swings Jean over a pond reflecting the image of the moon on the still waters and asks her what she sees. John points out that where ever they are Jean will know that she is over the moon. Jean becomes John's true love throughout the movie. John sacrifices his time and effort, works diligently, and Jean admires and loves him. This is not a short-term love but a deep devotion to each other. While John serves on his mission Jean completes her education and when he returns they are married.

Elder Groberg writes to Jean during some of the most trying moments of his mission: 1. When he is starving after the typhoon 2. After rats eat his feet soles. 3. After nearly drowning in the ocean.

This is a beautiful movie. The songs are beautiful and warm reflecting the richness of the Polynesian culture. The movie takes place in New Zealand with is dense jungles, blue water, and breathtaking sun-sets.

The movie is about forgiveness. The island preacher realizes Elder Groberg loves the people. The preacher walks as his son dies while Elder Groberg comforts, mourns, and cries for the loss of his son. Another moving part of the movie begins as the preacher brings food to Elder Groberg telling him, he know understands of Elder Groberg's love for the people and wants him to live. The island is saved by an incoming ship but the Christian preacher dies and Elder Groberg at his funeral places the empty bottle containing the life saving food on his casket.
