Movie Reviews of The OrphanageMovie Review: Eerie, not gory -- a fine, suspenseful ghost story Summary: 5 Stars
Amid the current crop of slasherly, hyperviolent horror films, "The Orphanage," from Spanish director Juan Antonio Bayona, stands out as an artful, restrained gem of the genre. The movie is driven by plot, personality, fine acting and gorgeous cinematography. Although many elements are familiar (with wisps of "The Shining," "The Devil's Backbone," and numerous other classics...) the film still feels fresh. Lead actor Belen Rueda's turn as a mother fighting to get her child back from the grip of supernatural forces is a powerful performance; indeed, everything about this film is well-crafted and intelligently assembled. Worth checking out! (Joe Sixpack, Slipcue film reviews)
Movie Review: Best Horror to come out in a long time Summary: 5 Stars
I'm a huge fan of scary movies where things go bump in the night and the relationships between people, ghosts, houses, places are developed to create a sense of belonging to the film. I wasn't keen on watching a horror movie with subtitles and thought it might distract from the experience, but I was so wrong. This is by far one of the best horror movies I've seen in a long time. There didn't need to be buckets of blood and shining knife blades in every scene like so many of them made today. The film was visually beautiful, the acting was top notch, and from beginning to end I was transported into the story. Add this one to your collection if you love "true" scary movies.
Movie Review: The Ghosts Have Arrived... Summary: 5 Stars
I love a well-told ghost story. THE ORPHANAGE is fantastic! It is a flesh-bubbler w/ loads of mystery and dread. If you enjoyed THE CHANGELING (w/ George C. Scott), THE HAUNTING (the original version), or any intelligent spooker, then consider this movie a gift from the ghoul-gods! I was very satisfied w/ the story, the heavy atmosphere, and the puzzle to be solved. The ending is both terrifying and heart-breaking at once. THE ORPHANAGE deals w/ the agony of tragic loss as well as the supernatural. It is a human story that slowly shifts into nightmare. It is also about the unbreakable bond between a mother and son. Highly recommended. Spanish w/ english subtitles...
Movie Review: Great movie Summary: 5 Stars
Some weeks ago I got some passes to the movies. They were free so I just selected a movie in spanish. (Even though I don't like Spanish from Spain accent). The movie catched my attention and provided me more than 90 minutes of great suspense.
I just ordered two DVDs of this movie and I really recommend to anyone who wants to have a good time watching this horror movie.
I've seen several movies in which is just went to the cinema to sleep. This one kept me awake and frozen.
Buy it now.
This movie is available only in spanish (English subtitles). I understand spanish perfectly but actually I prefer the latinamerican accent.
Movie Review: The Orphanage a Mus See Movie Summary: 5 Stars
Ultimately it was the reviews that convinced me to watch this movie, and truth be told I have not regretted it. As I watched the movie part of me was waiting for the boogie man to come out from behind a dark corner or perhaps gallons of blood to begin oozing form walls or some other place, not unlike many Hollywood scary movies. But instead I was very pleasantly entertained. The entire movie was very engaging, it kept me on the edge of my seat, and ultimately I was completely taken by surprise with an ending I never saw coming. A very sad, tragic, and sobering drama with a very scary feel that did not disappoint.....I highly recommend it.
