Movie Reviews of The Opposite of Sex

Movie Review: Brilliant Ensemble Comedy
Summary: 5 Stars

"The Opposite of Sex" has the reputation for not being for all tastes, which is unfortunate, since this should be required viewing for those with an open mind and an open heart. This is an endlessly clever and well acted comedy that portrays the lives of characters that have flaws, that make mistakes, who judge and criticize, often prematurely, in an effort to find true happiness...just like many real people do. And as many noted, the unquestionable highlights are the stunning performances from both Christina Ricci and Lisa Kudrow. Ricci has simply never been better...her sharp commentary is both wickedly clever and amazingly incisive. Kudrow has perhaps the best role of her career as the acid-tongued Lucia, and one can't help but empathize with her despite her sharp witted barbs. The most amazing feat of "The Opposite of Sex" is that despite all the characters' shortcomings, we become so deeply involved in their plight that the ending becomes unexpectedly heatrfelt and moving, but in the least traditional or sappy way imaginable. This is one of the very best films of the year, for fans of sharp comedy and heartfelt insights into people who are less than perfect, but more than a little extraordinary.

Movie Review: Fantastic! One you'll watch again and again.
Summary: 5 Stars

I picked this one up in London, never having heard of it before. I read the back of the DVD, thought it might be mildly amusing, and took it home. Why have I never heard of this film? It was sidesplitting, and all the while you almost feel guilty since you are literally laughing at others' misery. The lines are some of the best I have ever heard, but way across the line as far as our PC peers are concerned. Example: "They say that Aids is God's revenge on homosexuals, but it doesnt seem to be working. There seem to be more now than ever!" The story follows Ricci, a 16 year old Dragon lady in the making, who becomes pregnant, seduces her brother's boyfriend, steals his ex-lover's ashes and tries to blackmail him for cash through an ex-student of his claiming he was molested while in school. All the while, Kudrow's sexually frustrated (but hardly frigid) character serves as confidante to the brother, dropping thsese fantastic lines as she meddles and generally makes his life an even greater mess. Each character is recognisable, even down to Lovett's ugly cop with a big heart and open mind. What a shame I took so long to see this tremendously enjoyable film!

Movie Review: Meaning saturated in every line.
Summary: 5 Stars

One of the best independent films I've seen this year, THE OPPOSITE OF SEX focuses on the narrator of the film, Dedee Truitt, played by Christina Ricci. Perhaps her best performance so far, her dialogue is witty and knowing, her timing impeccable. She portrays Truitt as sort of an actress with no thoughts about getting into pictures or theater but just to get by. She flees to her sometimes understanding gay half-brother, Bill, falls in love with his boyfriend, and takes off with him to a distant place. Meanwhile, and there is a lot of "meanwhile"s in the script, that you seem to get overwhelmed, Bill's deceased love's sister, Lucia Delury, played with great strength by Lisa Kudrow, buys plane tickets to go after the newly formed couple. The film is packed full of truly interesting characters, imaginative one-liners, and a hearty script, one that could only been dreamed up by someone who has gone through this all and survived. That someone should be congratulated. Writer-director Don Roos has made a masterpiece, in my mind anyway. Just because it is an independent film and you have never heard of it, don't pass it by.

Movie Review: Great DVD for a Great Movie
Summary: 5 Stars

"The Opposite Of Sex" was arguably the wittiest and most subversive independent film to come out of 1998. Christina Ricci is the protagonist and the narrator, but it's Lisa Kudrow whose one-liners pretty much steal the show as Lucia (pronounced Loo-sha... a mispronunciation which is her characther's pet peeve). Ivan Sergei is the eye candy, and Johnny Galecki is the reductive gay semi-hustling stereotype, but it's Martin Donovan whose subtle performance really stands out among the male leads.

The DVD is a treat for fans of this movie. You get 5 deleted bonus scenes, and you can choose the option of watching them with or without director Don Roos's commentary. (One in particular -- an inspired exchange where the gang checks DeeDee into the hospital -- makes you wonder why it was ever edited out). This is a great DVD for your collection and a good value for the price.

Movie Review: Christina Ricci comes of age.
Summary: 5 Stars

I rented this movie on the advice of a friend and it blew me away. Lisa Kudrow and Christina Ricci play off of each other brilliantly in this well written dark comedy. For fans of Christina Ricci this is a must have for your movie collection. As the plot twists and turns Christina continually pummels the other characters with her witty and sarcastic narrative. Another appropriate title for this movie would have been "Christina Ricci as Dedee Truit" because she completely dominates the movie from start to end. This quality flick also goes beyond laughs to address societal issues such as forgiveness, teenage pregnancy and ruined friendship. Whether you're a "deep" thinking person or someone just looking for laughs, you won't be disappointed by this scathing comedy.
