Movie Reviews of The Omega Man

Movie Review: A classic
Summary: 4 Stars

Before rushing to watch the newly released remake entitled "I AM LEGEND" I strongly suggest to all sf and movie passionates taking a good look at least once to THE OMEGA MAN. It is essential to see Charlton Heston excellent performance and the minimalist and eery atmosphere of the deserted city. The feeling of alienation and mystery is priceless. It reminds me of "SOYLENT GREEN" or "PLANET OF THE APES". There are many details that appear outdated or plain ridiculous by today's standards and the mutant/zombie chapter could be totally rewritten to allow for a more credible and dynamic scenario. None of the less I still have a profound interest and nostalgia for this type of movie belonging to a time when special effects were less important than plot and interpretation.

Movie Review: Classic Sci Fi
Summary: 4 Stars

Before watching Will Smiths "I am Legand" I watched Omega man again - I'd seen it as a teen and remembered liking it very much. It stands the test of time very well, and it's fun to look back at some of the things that existed back in the '70's - like pay phones.

A lot of traditional values at war with each other - good vs evil, technology vs. religion, struggle to survive and find a cure for scientific research that destroys the world.

Some parts of the movie are cheesy, but all in all, this is a very enjoyable movie that makes you think a bit, has a lot of action and is well worth watching again. It succeeds very well without all of the CGI effects that helped make "I am Legend" so popular. Definatley worth a rental.

Movie Review: HESTON DOES WHAT HE CAN IN THIS DATED BUT, GREAT CLASSIC!
Summary: 4 Stars

I saw this film at age 9 in the theater and it was too cool to believe! Viewing it now it does seem a bit dated and it reeks of that whole "70's thing" It also has a TV movie feel to it when it comes to the stunts and some of the cast. Heston is well......"Heston"! and he can pretty much make anything work when it comes to these sci-fi flicks. I personally like this better than 'The Last Man On Earth' but, it's a matter of opinion. I thought Heston had a better fortress to keep the creature out and the creatures were more of a threat in this film. There is also more action and some funny 70's jive to laugh at! The DVD transfer is very good and there are some extras but, nothing special.

Movie Review: Doomsday Campy
Summary: 4 Stars

I remember when this came out, and at the time it was frightening, painting a picture of very dark days for humanity on the horizon.

I recently got the opportunity to see this film again, and I enjoyed it just as much as when I first saw it, but for different reasons.

It's solidly set in the 1970's, making it very dated. The 8-track player in the car is classic. The fact that this film is dated gives it a campy quality that makes it more entertaining.

The last man on earth story should be familiar, as it's been around for a long time, as has blood being spilled for our salvation.

They don't make them like this anymore, or do they?

Movie Review: Well worth it!
Summary: 4 Stars

There are plenty of plot reviews here for those who like all the detail. So if you want to read critical reviews this is not one of those.

IMO this film had a much better story than I Am Legend. The 70's feel is all through the movie in the actors, the clothes, the scenes and dialog. Charlton Heston acts with his usual larger than life gusto which defines his movies. My only complaint was that the "madness" which befalls "Family" members when they change was really not explained well. The sexuality between Heston and Cash was probably quite daring in 1971.

Oh...don't miss those crazy one-color "Track-Suits".
