Movie Reviews of The Office: Season Two

Movie Review: NBC'S The Office has a Life of It's Own!
Summary: 5 Stars

I am a major fan of the "original" Office from the BBC. When I first heard that NBC had somehow managed to acquire permission to produce an American version, I thought that NBC would destroy the franchise and produce a rolled up version of the show. To their credit, NBC has made a show which has a life of its own and this is hands down the best program on network TV today.

The writers and cast has managed to build upon Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant and the BBC crew had created in the original - a hillarious documentary about working in a place where people just try to get by under the most mundane circumstances. What's so great about this show is that the episodes reflect the modern work environment.

The DVD contains some great bonus features which are additional episodes in themselves. One feature shows the story of the "Accountants" which I thought was a hillarious "whodunnit" bit. The DVDs also contain those fake PSA commercials played by the actors from the show discussing the unusual topics of directions for weddings, cakes, bears, etc.

If you are a fan of the show, you will get a kick of all the extra features on this DVD. If you have never seen this show, hankering to see intelligent comedy and sick of seeing all the perturbations of "Survivor", check out this show...

Keep up the great work and keep those shows rolling!!

Movie Review: Better Than Any Sitcom You've Seen
Summary: 5 Stars

This has to be the best comedy series on the air. From Michael's absurdly self-centered antics, to Pam and Jim's captivating interactions/love story, to Kevin's facial expressions and Angela's arched eyebrow, this show will keep you laughing and might even make your eyes well at the final moments of the season finale.

While the first season of this hit show was good, it was only six episodes long. It felt sort of like an appetizer, especially since it was composed of completely standalone episode. This season, however, is a full course meal. While the episodes still maintain the "stand-alone" factor, there are now story threads (Dwight's secret relationship, Michael's 'connection' with his boss Jan, Michael's odd affection for the temp, Pam's engagement and how Jim feels about it, etc) that connect these episodes to make the season feel like a long, hilarious movie. Also, "The Office" is never too heavy handed with the romance or emotional moments. The driving force behind this show is the comedy, and the poignant moments never take away from that, which is reassuring.

By the end of this season, many "The Office" fans found themselves obsessed with Dwight. But I think each of these characters, both the main cast and the recurring characters, compliment each other equally with their hilarity. This is a show that anyone can enjoy.

9/10

Movie Review: Pure Gold
Summary: 5 Stars

I started season 2 as not really a fan, 1 was okay, but just something to pass the time. Starting with "The Fire" I realized this is very good and after watching "Christmas Party" I thought this just might be the greatest comedy of all time. Read my season 1 review for my thought on the show itself.

This year had my favorites. The Fire was the first truly great episode, Dwight stole the show. I continued to be amazed by it's humor and Christmas Party had me rolling. I suggest if you want to get into this show, watch that one first. It introduces you to all the characters and it is one of the funniest. Unfortunetly, it is followed by Booze Cruise which is my least favorite but it sets up an important plot point for the rest of the season.

The ones after that, "The Injury" through "Valentine's Day" are also some of the better ones. "Take Your Daughter to Work Day", "Drug Testing", and "Conflict Resolution" are good as well. Then is the 40-minute season finale "Casino Night" which probably overtakes Christmas Party as my favorite. And the last minute is a shocker!

Along with this, there is commentary, deleted scenes, outtakes, and they even add the online webisodes (10 2-minute episodes that can be found online throughout the summer). Any Office fan, wheather you have seen them already or want to start, must get this set. Go! NOW!

Movie Review: Second Season Glory
Summary: 5 Stars

Starting from the shaky premise of trying to repilicate the original version for American audiences, "The Office" came into living rooms in early 2005 as a mid-season replacement that seemed doomed to failure. But the sudden rise of Steve Carrell over that summer and the buzz surrounding the show saved it for this second season, presented here in an attractive set.

Wheras Michael Scott was an inept a-hole in the first season, here he comes off more like an inept a-hole...with spirit. He screws up more times than he gets it right, but when he does (i.e., blurting Jim's crush on Pam to the entire office), he advances the plot better than any standard character. And Jim and Pam have quite a season, you just have to see the season ender "Casino Night" (redefining "cliffhanger") for that. Their moments range from heartwarming to heartbreaking to everything in between, and I dare you not to get caught up in it or remember your own "JAM" stories from the past.

Dwight is out of control, and just about the best character on the show week in and week out. The supporting cast get more room to breath in this expanded season, and they shine. And all in all, the friendly folks at Scranton keep on putting out the best show on TV.

So if you haven't picked this up by now, do so. It's probably the best DVD buy of the past year.

Movie Review: Brilliant television doesn't come along often
Summary: 5 Stars

I have to completely disagree with Mr. Lees, the previous reviewer. I too saw the entire British run of The Office (and was a huge fan) before the American version premiered. The American version started as a fairly dull copy of the British series; however, before long it was apparent that the actors were wonderfully cast, that the writing was coming into its own, and that this Office was just as good as the original (albeit in a slightly different way). I feel it is inaccurate to say that the American version has somehow gone for cheap laughs or has been cloying in any manner; in fact, they could have gone with a laugh track, but they did NOT. They could have ditched the documentary format (for fear that American audiences would not "get" it) but they did NOT. There is no doubt that the original and the American versions are two different animals, but they are both brilliant, both hilarious, and both worthy of our time. I do think that Gervais's David Brent was a little more nuanced and dry than Steve Carrell's Michael Scott. On the other hand, Rainn Wilson's Dwight is the best character on EITHER show. This DVD set (season 2) was a short season but full of great episodes. Recommended.
