Movie Reviews of The Office: Season OneMovie Review: Give this show a chance, it is hilarious!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I have never seen the British show, so I was starting with a clean slate on that. But I was a big fan of Steve Carrell, from the Daily Show. I tried watching the pilot episode when it first aired, and was unimpressed. I didn't watch the rest of that first run of shows, because I just forgot that it was on. At the end of this summer, I was reading a TV reviewer's column, and he mentioned this show again as a hidden gem. I decided to give Steve Carrell a second chance, and have been watching the second season and enjoying it quite a bit. Then, I stumbled across the first season DVD, purchased it, and am now craaazy about this show. The Diversity Training show is so funny that I was guffawing alone. The actors are so amazingingly deadpan, and there is no laugh track, so this is just amazing. I am completely hooked. The Basketball episode, similarly, is absolutely classic. My hat is off to this series, and I extend my deepfelt apologies for not sticking through the first episode when it originally aired!!!
Movie Review: That's What She Said Summary: 5 Stars
I'm not really a TV show person because I have too many other things to do, and I can never make it to the TV every (day of the week) at (time). However, no TV show I've ever seen has been quite like The Office.
It's got a great cast. Steve Carell as Michael Scott, manager of the branch, is absolutely hilarious. John Krasinski is also very good, and Jenna Fischer, playing Pam Beesly, is very lovable, despite her character's horrendous last name.
It also features great writing. I can't really expound much on that, but if you watch the show, you'll know what I'm talking about.
Put everything together, and it's quite incredible. Sometimes, you may forget that what you are seeing isn't real, partly because of the documentary style and partly because evrything seems so real and genuine.
If you would like to laugh at the humor, cry at the drama or cringe at a Michael Scott stupid routine (plenty of those) than The Office is for you.
Movie Review: Comedy is Reborn Summary: 5 Stars
I love this show and I think NBC actually made one good decison this year by renewing it. Steve Carrell is genious as Michael Scott the manager with a little too much enthusiasm. The supporting cast is great and I'm glad that the bonus features are good because a 6 episode season of a half hour show is hardly worth twenty-two dollars but it's worth it. I didn't think the pilot was great but I tuned in again and I'm glad I did. I hope that if you don't watch this show that you decide to try it out because it is brillant. A lot of people say it isn't as good as the British version but it comes close. Check out Diversity Day it's the best in the set.
The Episodes
1. Pilot
2. Diversity Day
3. Healthcare
4. The Alliance
5. Basketball
6. Hot Girl
The bonus features include deleted scenes and audio commetaries. Even though it may seem pricey you'll probably get as much enjoyment out of it as you would any other show.
Movie Review: Glad it's on DVD Summary: 5 Stars
Even if they cancel this show midstream in season two, I'll be glad that I stumbled upon it in the middle of the first season's run. As for the BBC version, I never saw it UNTIL I saw the American version. I am now a huge fan of the BBC version, but I am unable to see why I have to like one OR the other.
Steve Carell is fabulous as the main character, and he's NOT supposed to be a carbon copy of Gervais' character in the BBC version. Steve brings his own tremendous talents to this show, and he creates his own character.
It's the awkwardness of the situations in this show that makes it funny, and it's the nearness to reality that makes it hard not to squirm in some of the scenes. We've all either had bosses with a tenuous grip on reality... or some of us might have been a boss like that. In which case, I would imagine there are those that just might not see the humor in this show.
This is a gem.
Movie Review: Freshest TV Comedy in Years Summary: 5 Stars
I have never seen the BBC original, so I'm not burdened by the curse of comparison. As far as I'm concerend, The Office is the freshest, most intelligent and straight out funniest show to play on television for some time (with the possible exception of "Scrubs"). For anyone who has worked in a similar setting, the characters of The Office are instantly recognizable and dead-on accurate. Steve Carrell is terrific and the rest of the cast are just as superb. I disagree with those who criticize the Michael Scott character as too over the top or completely irredemable. Michael Scott is in fact all too real, and as the show develops, so does the character. He may be a clueless boob and deserve to be alone, but in the episode where he hopes to drive the purse saleswoman home, only the most heartless can't fill a little sympathy for him as he watches her get in Jim's car. This is a compilation that I personally intend to buy soon.
