Movie Reviews of The Office: Season OneMovie Review: Funniest Show on Network TV Today Summary: 5 Stars
Michael, Pam, Jim, Dwight... even Oscar. The sheer brilliance behind this television comedy is mind blowing. It is so funny that my husband and I usually watch it on Thursday nights, and then first thing Friday morning too... some of the "officisms" have become our most treasured inside jokes. "Don't send Dwight" (whenever my husband is hurt or stuck or pretty much whenever) "Dunder Mifflin, this is Pam" (everytime the phone rings) I could go on... This season is only one disc, I believe it is 6 episodes. We got it a few weeks ago and we are spacing it out so that we are able to enjoy it. We have watched the first two episodes so far and this team of actors could not work any better together. We had a hard time finding season one at Target, so we came here to order it, and we will be first in line for the second season. For those of you (all of us) who have ever had a boss that you hated~ you have to watch this. Michael and his employees take the edge off of a bad day, and put your own work situation into a humorous light. If you don't see a little bit of every bad boss you EVER had in Michael Scott, then they must not have been that bad... You will not regret buying this dvd... have fun!
Movie Review: A Short Burst of Sitcom Glory Summary: 5 Stars
The first season of The Office is a mere six episodes long, but don't let the brevity of this season dissuade you from purchasing it (just wait 'til it goes on sale). If you've never seen the beginning of The Office then this season on DVD is crucial as it sets up the relationships between Dwight and Jim, Michael and his employees, and to some extent Jim and Pam (although their developing relationship doesn't really take center stage 'til later seasons).
The six episodes featured on this DVD are hysterical and something I watch again and again, at least once every couple months. Due to its high replay value I definitely recommend purchasing this season on DVD. It's also one that has been loaned to friends several times so they can all see how The Office started and while you might be thinking, "Why would I buy this when TBS shows reruns of The Office all the time?" you should buy it because they don't often air Season One episodes, and they don't necessarily show the episodes in order and I really think The Office, with its inside jokes and awkward relationships, is really best watched in order.
Happy viewing!
Movie Review: Very funny show Summary: 5 Stars
This is an "Americanized" version of a very funny and successful BBC comedy of the same name. It was with some reservations that I watched this show since US copies of British shows seem to rarely work out very well. This is an exception. It basically follows the same premise as the BBC version and has many characters that are very similar to the ones in the original. However the similarity ends there. Each of the actors brings there own interpretation to their character and makes it unique and quite funny. Quite honestly, I had never heard of any of these talented actors until seeing this show. But they are proving themselves to be very capable by making this a hilarious show. Each story typically revolves around the boss, Michael Scott and his lame attempts to interact with the people around him. He has a much higher opinion of himself than anyone else does. The ensemble cast seems to have equal portions of screen time and no single character dominates the show. If you have ever worked in an office environment, you will probably recognize some of these individuals. A very funny show, well worth watching.
Movie Review: The First and Best Season Summary: 5 Stars
The first season of THE OFFICE consisted of only a few episodes (this is a one DVD "set") but they were hilarious.
The show was shot in "documentary style", and it follows the work and lives of the Scranton, Pennsylvania employees of a printing company, Dunder Mifflin. Except for the beet-farming German-American character, Dwight Schrute, the characters seemed like real people. (Dwight was portrayed as too crazy to be real from the start.) The head of the office, Michael Scott, was portrayed as quirky but not as the total idiot that he would become in the following seasons. It was laugh out loud funny, with healthy doses of politically incorrect humor.
In the second season, more characters were developed into "too crazy to be believable", and it devolved into a soap opera. There were less laughs and, too often, the viewer is left thinking, "This is just too stupid."
During it's first season, THE OFFICE was the best show on television since at least the late 1980s. (Not that that's saying much.)
Movie Review: The smartest show since "Curb Your Enthusiasm"; maybe better! Summary: 5 Stars
Being a fan of Steve Carrell ever since he was on "The Daily Show", I made sure to give this show a try. The pilot episode was decent, kind of up and down, but the second episode, "Diversity Day", was the one that got me and my wife hooked. My wife literally fell off the couch she was laughing so hard! I am so happy that NBC gave this show a second chance; it has to be only a matter of time before the general public catches on. Hey, "Seinfeld" didn't immediately take off either. Everyone I have recommended this show to has thanked me for letting them know about it, as I kind-of made it my personal mission as it didn't have the best ratings, and it was up against so much unnecessary backlash from the worshipers of the English version of the show. I couldn't wait to buy the DVD, and everyone I have let borrow it just absolutley raves about the show! There are a lot of deleted scenes on the DVD that I know were left out of the various episodes simply due to time restraints, as most are just as hilarious. This DVD is a keeper, bar none!
