Movie Reviews of The Odd CoupleMovie Review: Opposites attract?? Summary: 5 Stars
Neil Simon's play about two men with very opposite personalities who decide to room together. Felix (Jack Lemmon), who is a compulsive everything, especially when it comes to neatness, moves in with divorced friend Oscar (Walter Matthau), who is a slob, after Felix's wife leaves him. Sparks fly, of course; they have domestic quarells just like when they were both married. Good lines abound (though Simon has been funnier elsewhere), and Lemmon and Matthau are excellent. An even more popular TV series followed, with almost total emphasis being on the neatness vs. sloppiness theme; that idea is heavily emphasized in this movie, too, but there is also something about divorce and getting on with life as well. Worth a watch.
Movie Review: A Perfect Comedy Team in the Perfect Comedy Summary: 5 Stars
Can two divorced men share an apartment without driving each other crazy? This movie proves that the answer is no. Oscar is a sloppy New York sports writer. Felix is a fussy neat freak who writes the news for television. Both are divorced and share an apartment together. Felix complains about a pickle on the floor, and Oscar complains about Felix washing Oscar's poker cards. Yes, they get on each other's nerves endlessly, that is, until Oscar throws Felix out. This movie is one of my all-time favorites, and unlike other movies I've seen, it doesn't get stale with repeated viewings. All in all, a classic comedy by Neil Simon.
Movie Review: Oddness Equals Greatness Summary: 5 Stars
Being a community theatre director, I am always looking for videos of prospective shows. There is no better comedy connection than Lemmon and Matthau. They are the ultimate comedy team, not because they are so much alike, but because they are so different. They actually play to each other's strengths, much the same way that Neil Simon has created this story--two different guys, so different that the comedy is created through their diversity. The genius of Simon is exponentially multiplied by Lemmon and Matthau. The DVD is certainly reasonably priced for such a gem. Don't miss this one.
Movie Review: Great Classic - How about Wide-Screen Summary: 5 Stars
This film is great. I love the poker scenes, and the classic bachelor pad setup, with Oscar (Walter Matheau) playing a classic performance. But, on VHS some of the scenes are cropped. Like when Felix and Oscar are meeting the neighbor "goyls" from upstairs, you miss Felix's or Oscar's reactions to each other when Felix makes embarrassing statements. I'd like to hear if the DVD wide screen makes up for this, and how the DVD sound quality is. Of course, you can't expect to much in sound, since it was recorded before today's sound standards were available.
Movie Review: An American Genre Piece Of Art Not To Be Missed Summary: 5 Stars
One of the funniest and best loved comedies later made into a great TV series(waiting for the DVD)...these 2 great actors are indeed wonderful in their roles depicting 2 New York divorced men who end up living together in a marriage of opposites..Oscar,Walter Matthau, the sportswriter playboy "slob" and Felix,Jack Lemmon, the pedantic,OCD, photographer..This movie is more than a movie but defined New York mentality for so many and is an indepth portrait of two distinct personalities finding and preserving their friendship despite the "odds".
