Movie Review: Audrey Magnificent; Peter Sellers Fantastic

I am glad this is finally going to be on dvd. This is one of
Audrey's finest roles and she is surrounded by Dames Edith Evans,
Peggy Ashcroft and in other roles such great character actresses
as Mildred Dunnock, Patrica Collinge and Beatrice Straight. And
in probably her first movie, Colleen Dewhurst is seen as the
"Angel Gabriel". Peter Finch gave maybe his best performance as
Dr. Fortunato. This is a perfect film and the 155 minutes fly
by.

This is a real sleeper. Fascinating for its 1959 sensibilities with regard to the white man's burden, its depiction of "the natives," the joys of being colonized by Belgium. In fairness, it is also a fascinating psychological portrait of a woman torn between spirituality and the worlds of science and politics. Hepburn at her best. This old film is well done and offers an interesting look inside the walls of a Roman Catholic cloister in Belgium, and then at the missionary field of Africa. But it also provides the same message as the Bible's Old Testament, that strict obedience to an exacting set of rules and regulations is impossible. Set in Belgium and South Africa just prior to WWII, the story of a gifted young women torn between her faith and family is the perfect vehicle to showcase Ms Hepburn at her dramatic best. I have been wanting to buy the Nun's Story because I have had it on video for a long time, so when I got the DVD, I was very happy with it. I was also impressed at the promptness of delivery and would absolutely recommend everyone get the DVD. Great transmission, great quality, affordable price!
