Movie Reviews of The Nun's StoryMovie Review: THE ESSENCE OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH Summary: 5 Stars
Perhaps no film I've ever seen has so well captured the essence of the Roman Catholic Church before Vatican II. This is a simple and perfectly sustained work of art about the spiritual struggle of one soul who seeks to be a nun and a nurse in a semi-cloistered convent before and during World War II. It is a lense through which one can see tne entire religion and its deepest values: complete dedication to Our Lord Jesus Christ, complete love of neighbor and of enemy, complete abandon to the will and the way of Christ. Watching the film tonight, I can hardly believe that it was made in 1959, even though I've watched it many times over the years. It is timeless in its power. For Catholic and non-Catholic, it provides profound religious truths. It transcends its subject matter and asks of the viewer: if you believe in Him, what are you doing for Him? The film speaks to the human in each of us, to the broken one in each of us, and reminds us of the absolute to which a person can give his or her life.
Movie Review: Everyone's Story Summary: 5 Stars
This movie is about a nun who tries very hard to make her vocation work. She was a better Religious than many of the so-called "living Rules" around her because she did more soul-searching. The story is a tragedy insofar as she was never able to reconcile her inability to be perfect with the many graces she was receiving by simply being, a lesson every Religious must learn in order to persevere.
It is really about all of us, our struggle to make sense of life. Sometimes we impose a certain order on it to manage it better, but we must have a deep faith for those times when that order goes awry. That is when we know what having faithy truly is. The secret is not to abandon the order and self-discipline that once served us so well, but to realize that, in itself, it is not enough and only makes sense if we have faith in God Himself. A modern parable that deals with the same issue is the play "Doubt," recently also made into a movie.

Movie Review: LIVING THE CRUCIFIED LIFE Summary: 5 Stars
There are very few movies (or books) available to the true Christian believer that demonstrate the life of taking up your cross and following Christ daily. Of dying to self - so that it is no longer about you but only Christ. THIS IS ONE OF THOSE MOVIES that will be of benefit to you if you long to submit to Him - NOT THE RITUALS, NOT RELIGION - but the life that is no longer YOU - the death of YOU, of self, of vanity, of pride - of coming out from among the world and being separate. And even though the main character struggles with obedience, there is a deeper depth (for truly she is rejecting RELIGION AND RITUALS and NOT CHRIST). It is also a powerful testimony of living your life for Him no matter what - including disappointment; of finding that what HE CHOOSES is best and not that which we could ever dream up for ourselves. A MUST SEE MOVIE. WELL DONE. You won't be disappointed if you truly long for Christ, to live in His perfect will.
Movie Review: 50 Years After Summary: 5 Stars
This film is fresh as a newborn baby! Having seen it in 1960 first time and 2010 the second time I am surprised of its impact, which now at 68 is different from the age of 18. The real difference must have taken place in me and not the film and somehow this difference does not seem to be important. Much more important is the message of the story by Kathryn Hulme, which is so beautifully interpreted in the head role by Audrey Hepburn, other actors and good direction.
What made a particular impression on me was the depth of Monastery practises, the language used to express these and the inner world of happenings in there and moreover that the nun chose to get out in order to help those who are outside and to come back to life.
Movie Review: Finally On DVD Summary: 5 Stars
"The Nun's Story" is a movie I watch everytime it shows on TV (unfortunately too rarely), plus I've had the VHS version for years. I'm not sure exactly what I find so compelling about this movie, but I find it incredibly moving everytime I see it.
Audrey Hepburn is just tremendous, as is the entire cast. The story is thought-provoking in a way too few movies made today are.
I grew up Catholic (though admittedly a bit lapsed today) and was educated by nuns up through high school. This movie reflects what I saw in the sisters from school - some were mean and petty, others unbelievably generous and spiritual, but all ultimately human. This movie really resonates for me, maybe because of my memories growing up.
