Movie Reviews of The Neverending StoryMovie Review: This movie has a Neverending Effect on me Summary: 5 Stars
This film has a habit of affecting people deeply in usually very positive ways. I can say that it saved me in my darkest hour and distributed the very beautiful message to me that creativity is the most powerful force we have against becoming empty "masses of men who lead lives of quiet desperation." The idea of the film and book portrays that of what a true genius is: a creator who if indulges too much in his creation loses himself in his work. An unlikely genius... a young boy... who reads about another little boy who takes on a quest with no weapons, no help from anyone, with the anticipation of horrible danger... possible death, and with no chance for success. No sensible adult would take on that quest. I child would when there is no other choice. Tenaciousness and creativity in the realm of impossibilities... Strange creatures and impressive beauty... this film portrays visually the never-ending framing device that is used in the book... When seen in widescreen, the artful German style can be savored. Here is a fantasy like no other because... The NeverEnding Story is your story.
Movie Review: An answer to the big question..... Summary: 5 Stars
Just in case anyone is wondering, as one reviewer did, the name that Bastien yells out the window at the end of the movie is "Moonchild". My wife happened upon a book version of the story, and it is spelled out there. It is very difficult to understand him in the film, but if you listen carefully, he yells it out in 3 syllables -- "Moon---chi---uld!!!" As for the movie, it's nothing short of a classic. I revisited this movie recently, having not seen it since I was young, when it was my favorite movie. I was struck by some logical inconsistencies (Why is Atreiu the only hope? Aren't there some grown-up Plains warriors who would fare better? Why can't he take his bow and arrow??) But that's the cynical adult in me talking. The movie has such terrific effects and the puppets are incredible. Both the Luck Dragon and the Rock Biter look more real than the digital characters in recent movies. And as for Bastien's "wish" at the end of the movie.....it's exactly what any little boy would want. What a great movie!!!
Movie Review: Not just a film within a film; a profound connection. Summary: 5 Stars
What I liked about The Neverending Story is that what appears to be a framing device - a boy reading a book of adventures that comprise the bulk of the film - actually turns out to be an integral part of the whole premise. The boy reading is actually important to what he's reading about, sort of the flipside of what we accept as reality. Bastian (Barret Oliver) skips class after arriving too late for a math test, and spends the time reading The NeverEnding Story, about the fantastic characters of Fantasia, which is slowly succumbing to "nothingness."
In the story, which is almost like another film within the film, plains warrior Atreyu (Noah Hathaway) is sent on a quest to stop the nothingness. His adventures are as entertaining - with imaginative and often poignant action - as almost any fantasy movie like Lord Of The Rings or Harry Potter, though with twenty-year older special effects. But as it appears Atreyu's about to fail in his quest, Bastian's own role is revealed very dramatically, and the whole result is quite profound.

The Neverending Story
Movie Review: Before 'Poseidon',there was the Neverending Story Summary: 5 Stars
Yes,it had a cheesy theme song, but it counts as a classic. Before Wolfgang Peterson did 'Poseidon'&'A Perfect Storm' (as well as 'Troy'),he transformed Michael Ende's fantasy novel into a fun movie.
The movie reflects the novel's free-flowing blend of fantasy genres. There are rock creatures, trolls,Atreyu who seems vaguely Native American&the Childlike Empress. In most fantasy films, the bad guy is in dark armor or is a monster of some sort.In "The Neverending Story",it's Nothing, the void itself.A strange concept, but the novel&movie make it work. The ending is quite spectacular, considering that all that's left is a grain of sand to recreate the whole world.
"Neverending Story" has a quest like other fantasy movies, but it's not the usual kind. It's fascinating, riveting, and well-done.Stick with the first movie;its sequels are quite awful (though Jack Black is hilarious as an over-the-top bad guy in the third movie!)
This is an enjoyable movie.
