Movie Reviews of The Nativity StoryMovie Review: The best Christmas movie ever made Summary: 5 Stars
There has never been a better film depiction of the Christmas story than The Nativity Story. The casting director should win awards for the quality of the cast assembled. The screenplay is outstanding and true to the biblical account of Jesus's birth. The fear, strain, anguish and pain suffered by Mary and Joseph are almost palpable in the theater. Herod's evil seemingly slithers off the screen. Jesus's birth is beautiful and touching, particularly when the shepherds first see him.
Finally, movie makers are getting the message and making biblical films more authentic. Gone - hopefully for good - are the days of blond haired, blue eyed Jesuses. Mary (Keira Castle-Hughes) and Joseph (Oscar Isaac) look like ancient Jews. The rest of the cast, the sets and the props all seem authentic. It is also obvious that this movie wasn't done on the cheap. If there is one shortcoming - a very minor one at that - it is that the angel, Gabriel (Alexander Siddig) doesn't seem very. . .angelic. He looks like any other citizen of Nazareth (albeit one wearing glowing white robes.)
What violence is in the film is subdued enough so that the movie remains kid-friendly.
All in all, The Nativity Story is fantastic. Get to the theater and see it before Christmas!
Movie Review: Moving and different. Summary: 5 Stars
As everyone, or nearly everyone, knows the story of Mary and Joseph I would like to add what I enjoyed about this film. Mainly, that they fleshed out Joseph's character. In the bible, you hear from the angel Gabriel, Mary, Herod, and many others key characters involved with the story, but Joseph never says a recorded word. How he must of felt in those days, betrayed and humiliated that a woman of virtue he had chosen for his wife was suddenly with child. Many believe him to be truly a marginal player, but he had such a strong faith that many people wish that they had today. This film shows how both Mary and Joseph came to terms with what was happening to both of them, and it also showed their fears of what was to come. Joseph protected Mary from harm, he traveled with her to Bethlehem and protected both her and her unborn child, and then onto Egypt before Herod's attack. I think Joseph was the original model for the strong, silent type. I am sure Joseph had dreams and goals of his own, but he had to put them aside. He overcame anger and frustration to become the step-father of the Christ child. He never knew wealth or prestige or honor in his lifetime, but victory belonged to him nonetheless.
Movie Review: THIS IS THE PERFECT MOVIE TO WATCH AT CHRISTMAS TIME! AND ANY DAY OF THE YEAR! Summary: 5 Stars
This is a wonderful movie about Mary and Joseph, and the birth of Jesus, our Savior! I loved the way this movie was done, it gives you a closer, realer look of how it must have been for Mary and Joseph, during those dangerous time, with the Romans always causing trouble, for the jewish people, and with the laws that Mary and Joseph as jews had to abide by, even among their own people.
My favorite scenes is where the shepherd, offers his campfire to Mary to warm herself by, and the scene where Mary ,while she is watching Joseph give food to the little donkey, She realizes that Joseph, the man that she is married to ,is a very special, good man, who has a tender pure heart.
Of course, Joseph has always known that Mary was a very good, and special godly woman. I also loved the beautiful scene , when Jesus was born! I just loved the three wise men! I just wished that the movie lasted longer! In this movie I realized how special and good Mary and Joseph where, and how devoted they where to God! This movie gives you the reasons why God chose Mary and Joseph, to be Jesus's parents here on earth! This is a very heartwarming, special movie!
Movie Review: The Eye Opener Summary: 5 Stars
I was awesomely surprised by this movie. As a catholic I have heard the nativity story told over and over since I was a child. It was always the same , Romantic, peaceful, glorious, ...but I never really connected with it on a spiritual level. This Movie opened my eyes to how it truely must have been for Mary and Joseph. It shows the real life stiuations that Mary had to face as a woman living in a small town, where getting pregnant outside of her marrige bed was cause to be stoned to death. When Joseph sees her pregnant for the fisrt time and believes that she has betrayed him, and how in a dream God tells him to take Mary as his Wife because she is the Mother of Our Lord and to name him Jesus! The Trip to Bethlehem, and how difficult that was for a women in her last months, and Josephs frantic search for a place so that Mary who is in labor , could deliver. The Morals that were set in that time, are still present in our society today, which really made this movie become real for me. I recommend this movie for anyone of any age. Best movie for the Christmas season, I was so inspired by it, I brought copies for all my friends and family as christmas gifts.
Movie Review: A faithfull blessing... Summary: 5 Stars
Although this movie is a few years old, I just watched it with my wife who is expecting our second daughter, Pai( we got the name from the Whale Rider) in December. I was amazed once again by the presence of Keisha Castle Hughes. She is a beautiful, talented actress that I hope to see in many more movies. The cast was very well done...this is a movie that can restore one's faith and lead you to a place you've been hiding from. This is a beautiful story of the journey and tribulations of Mary and Joseph. Oscar Isaac is very believable as Joseph and really sells the faithful husband to a tee. The movie starts with a sad telling of the "Killing of the Innocents" ordered by the fearful King Herod, who considers himself the "king of the Jews"...and goes thru the Journey of the 3 wise men, Gaspar, Melcior, and Balthasar following the "Star of Bethlaham" to Mary and Joseph's journey to the eventual birth of our lord and savior, the baby Jesus. This is a story of faith, belief & trust. It is said in the movie to Mary that everyone has a gift...This is the story of Mary, Joseph and the greatest gift of all...the birth of Jesus, our Christ.
