Movie Reviews of The MysteriansMovie Review: Very Good! Summary: 4 Stars
I love nostalgic Japanese Sci-Fi! This is one of their best!
Movie Review: Best of genre - completey whacky Summary: 3 Stars
Ah yes, everything great about low-budget Japanese monster movies rolled into one. Not only are there giant monsters to battle but aliens as well, mixed in with the some of the sleaziest special effects imaginable.
There's a lot of plot, but let's skip all that nonsense and focus in on the reasons to watch this silly thing, namely over the top screen moments. The monster is great, it's actually a robot built by the aliens, inexplicably in the shape of a dinosaur (pre-dating transformers?). Why it stomps around the countryside with the "Japanese Self Defense Forces" fruitlessy shooting at it isn't clear, but it's still great.
The rest of the movie involves a battle by the plucky JSDF against the Mysterians, who have built a base that looks like an upside down salad bowl with a plate on top. Somehow, in spite of their advanced technology, the JSDF triumphs by very quickly developing their own array of ray guns, one of which is announced in a great bit of overdub, "Ah! Electronic can-non." The payoff is a series of Flash-Gordon type spaceship shots of tubular shaped craft motoring hortizontally through the atmosphere with smoke trails curling up out of their tails towards the studio ceiling. A howl.
You can't go wrong with this, there's plenty to laugh at, the only drawback being a fair amount of plot, you can fast forward through that. But don't miss an appearance by . . . James Bond. No kidding. I mean, robots, monsters, aliens capturing our women, James Bond . . . what else could you want?
Movie Review: A Fun Sci-Fi Film Summary: 3 Stars
The Mysterians is a film that is a classic but is not what I would consider to be great. In fact, it's good.
The story is pretty interesting. The Mysterian race has come to earth in peace. They only ask for three square kilometers of land and want the right to breed with earth women. Of course the human race is not too happy about the requests, so all-out war is declared on the Mysterians.
The acting is pretty good for a late 1950s Japanese sci-fi film and the special effects are...well...good for the time but just seem to out of line at times. The miniature work is decent but they can easily be distinguished as miniatures. Nonetheless, for what is offered, it is pretty entertaining. My biggest complaint with the film is that the story tends to drag in certain areas, slowing it down when it was looking as if it were to speed up and get exciting.
In the end, The Mysterians is a fun film that includes many cliches associated with 50s sci-fi films. The story is a little slow in areas but does deliver very well! Recommended for those who like alien vs. mankind films!
Movie Review: All this for 3 kilometers of land! Summary: 3 Stars
Oh yeah the women... right...
You can probably guess the quality of drama from the synopsis on the back of the box. No surprises here. Not much attempt at plot logic, either. Seriously, these guys could've got a lot further with dinner and a movie, but no -- they hafta' invade the earth.
*sigh* I guess the more things change...
BUT, the Tokyo-Shock Media-Blasters DVD version does include a commentary, some nice extras, new sound mixes, and a first rate transfer! Some minor scratching during the battle-sequences, but aside from that, excellent technical quality.
If you're buying this for nostalgic reasons you won't be disappointed!
Movie Review: Way beyond dumb Summary: 2 Stars
I thought this was a movie I had seen when I was a youngster with my Dad, so I bought it. Turns out it wasn't. This thing makes Godzilla look like an Oscar Nominee. It's so bad it's funny. This dippy looking Robot with a pointy nose and light bulb looking eyes stumbles around crashing into just about everything. Maybe the guy in the suit had a very limited range of vision? If this thing were real it would pose no threat to anyone because EVERYON could get away from it. If you like Cheesy Japanese science fiction movies with terrible plots and bogus stunts that are so bad their laughable then buy the CD. Otherwise watch an old version of Godzilla again.
