Movie Reviews of The Muppets' Wizard of Oz

Movie Review: The Weakest Muppet movie so far...
Summary: 3 Stars

This movie has a lot of great qualities, but it's got a few flaws as well. The big one being Ms. Ashanti and her god-awful acting!

The story was, oddly enough, a lot closer to the original book than Garland's version was. Which was a pleasant suprise for me, since I loved the book as a child much more than the famous Garland movie. The jokes had me rolling on the floor with laughter, and I was pleased that the Muppets weren't afraid to continue to entertain their adult audience as well as the little kids.

Speaking of the adult humor, I am irritated to read so many angry comments about them from other people's reviews here. Especially from those who claim to have watched the Muppets since they were kids.

I can't help but question if they've ever actually sat down and re-watched all of the Muppet shows and movies that came before this one...and if so, did they have a problem with the adult content/humor in them too? Adult content/humor has always been a part of the Muppets.

And many of the cartoons I grew up watching as a kid (as well as many of the ones that are on now from what I've seen) had lots of adult content and humor (far, far worse than anything that was said or shown in this movie), and it flys over the kids heads! That's why they're still enjoyable to many people of my generation even today, because it can still appeal to us even though we're all adults now. The same applies with the Muppets, and I'm glad they haven't been watered down over the years!

Now that I've gotten that off my chest, I shall now get back on track with the review itself.

It was a pleasure to see old faces (Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem, Camilla, etc), as well as my favorite "new" Muppets from "Muppets Tonight" (I can't wait for that to come out on dvd). As I said before, the jokes were great as well as the songs (well...the ones the Muppets sang anyway...).

I really didn't like Ms. Ashanti as Dorothy, she was more annoying than likeable to me and I wasn't all that impressed with her acting (the same applies to the teen pop stars from the Disney Channel who performed along side the Muppets in the two "Studio DC" specials). I was also less than impressed with the breif moments when CGI was used for The Great and Powerful Wizard (although...it was a cute touch when Gonzo got to see the Wizard).

Overall, I liked this movie. It's nowhere near as good as the other movies, but I really didn't think it was all that bad either (most of the bad reviews seem to stem from over-protective parents who are pretty clueless about the history of the Muppets, as well as american cartoons over the last 10-15 years...).

Movie Review: The worst muppet movie
Summary: 3 Stars

The muppets have had some great movies in the past such as The Muppet Christmas Carol,The Great Muppet Caper, and The Muppet Movie. But the muppets have had some bad movies also such as Kermit's Swamp Years and The Muppets Wizard of Oz.The muppets are about to die if someone does not save them.I hope that someone who knows what they are doing can make a good muppet movie to save the muppets.I would love to see another muppet movie that is good enough to be in the theaters.Whoever made The Muppets Wizard of Oz did not know what they were doing and did not understand the muppets. For example in The Muppets Wizard of Oz the muppets are called puppets and the muppets are not puppets.Kermit is a frog,Miss Piggy is a pig,Fozzie is a bear, you understand. But in The Muppets Wizard of Oz the muppets looked fake because YOU COULD SEE STRINGS ON THEM in every scene. This is another example of how these people did not know how to control the muppets. When Jim Henson was alive and he controled the muppets they looked real and you could never see strings on them. You could see how cheaply made The Muppets Wizard of Oz was and it should have never been made in the first place unless if someone could make it right. Most of the jokes in this movie were not funny. The story line was terrible and I wish that it would have been more like the old Wizard of Oz movie. The Muppets Wizard of Oz could have been a good movie if 1)It was not cheaply made 2)If Jim Henson's son made it.I did enjoy seeing Miss Piggy in this movie and I give this movie three stars only for Miss Piggy.Miss Piggy is so cool. The only reason that I can give you to buy The Muppets Wizard of Oz is just to have all of the muppet movies on DVD.But I will warn you that this movie next to Kermit's swamp years is the worst muppet movie ever made.Save your money and wait until November 29 to buy special editions of the best muppet movies to celebrate Kermit's 50th anniversary. On November 29,2005 four of the best muppet movies such as The Muppet Movie,The Great Muppet Caper,The Muppet Christmas Carol, and Muppet Treasure Island will be released on special edition DVDs.So just save your money for that. Thanks for reading.

Movie Review: It's cool
Summary: 3 Stars

I'd actually finished the movie since catching it on ABC @ 8pm last night and was not a bit dissappointed. Yes the movie deserves better or it's serves more I mean this is showing where my main girl Ashanti is teaching her acting abilites w/ the Muppets and among other films as well. She can sure do anything. As to say the Muppets are still my all-time favorite people I grew watching as a kid from TV, movies, music, etc.

Ok back to the movie as I was watching this, I was figuring sum sides were Ashanti left were she play Dorothy Gale who dreams of becoming a sensational superstar. Her Aunt Em (played by Queen Latifah, she sure is a legend in the movie and music business) and Uncle Henry or whatever (played by my man David Alan Grier which ya'll know him from In Living Color and other stuff as well), is being more polite to her daughther to go to that audition while Aunt Em beg her not to refuse to go out or so.

Ok long story short, she's deserves what she gets. As ya'll seen her going back to the house to save her lil pet Toto who is a prawn but not a dog which call consider from the previous Wizard of Oz films (e.g. THE WIZARD OF OZ and THE WIZ) just b/c of the tornado coming and her parents try to save her but she just kept trying stay her until the tornado took her into the world of Oz to Yellow Brick Road.

Ok there isn't much I had to say bout it but I put down some more later if I have to. Not to say this isn't a bad movie, don't get wrong or no offence. I believe this is a must as necessary if u want see 'mo directions to the film. Good job that Ashanti did her thing. But it needs more.

Movie Review: not a total waste of time
Summary: 3 Stars

i don't think that ashanti was a poor casting choice as dorothy. i imagine that she, like judy garland, was cast not only for her vocal talent, but also because there's a certain sweetness in her face and youthful appeal. if the direction and writing had been just a little more consistently creative, there would not have been so much weight on her acting ability to carry some particularly awkward scenes.

i thought there were a number of funny jokes (i did laugh out loud, more at the beginning, less toward the end), and some great concepts too, like making the poppy fields a psychedelic club, the wizard a master of CGI, and toto a king prawn - brilliant! pepe is the prawn of my dreams, ok. the scene where quentin tarantino pitches some action sequences to kermit was very funny, in my opinion, another great concept.

i didn't expect this to be a children's movie, because for as long as i've known the muppets their humor has always been aimed at adults. but it's definitely not a "family film", as kermit calls it in the tarantino scene.

the story unfortunately drags in too many places which takes the wind out of a lot of the good jokes. and after the opening number, the rest of the songs are a real letdown. rather than being a consistently 3-star film, the quality is up and down, up and down, between 2 and 4 stars.

the opening song, 'gotta get out of kansas' really got my hopes up for this movie. it's catchy and it's got heart. if only the rest of the movie were that good.

Movie Review: Not that great but not that bad either
Summary: 3 Stars

A lot of reviewers have given this some tough ratings. A lot of their criticisms ring true. It could have been funnier and it definitely is not their best work. At times the story is formulaic with little thought added. That being said it is still a fun family movie. There is plenty of material to keep you laughing. Parents will like the subtle humor and kids will like it just because there are muppets. All in all a worthwhile movie to watch.

For those that have stated a problem with the adult-oriented humor get over it. The muppets have always done this. I would say that Muppets Take Manhattan has at least as much, if not more, adult oriented humor. Also it is a lot more apparent. I don't remeber the name of the muppet but the blond one states that she won't take off her clothes even if it is done artfully. that is a whole lot more obvious than anything a kid would pick up on in Oz.

The Muppets have always been an adult geared show in the guise of a kid's program. To now try to sanitize and turn it into something for a 3 year old would completely ruin their magic. Need I remind everyone that Alice Cooper was once on the show, "Welcome to my nightmare", also Ozzie Osborne "Born to be Wild." . These are hardly people you would put on if you were trying to orient it towards kids. The Muppets are for adults but it is safe to let kids watch as well because they won't get the humor.
