Movie Reviews of The Muppets' Wizard of Oz

Movie Review: Good old Muppet fun
Summary: 4 Stars

Granted, this was no Muppet Treasure Island or The Muppets Take Manhattan. It was certainly not The Muppet Movie, but I still had tons of fun watching it.

First off, I think the cinematography of the incoming tornado was some of the most original visual imagery I've seen in a TV movie. I'm speaking of one shot in which Dorothy walks past a lawn that seems to glow bright green while the grey clouds move in, casting a greyscale shadow over everything else. The shot is stimulating and convincing.

True, the songs were not nearly as catchy as they should've been, but that is made up for with a somewhat sick sense of humor. Of course there's the great scene where GOD (quentin tarantino) pitches the climactic fight scene to Kermit. We have the tin man (Gonzo the robot) showing off his cell phone/nose; someone inquires about the buttons on his chest, and he replies, "Oh, those are my nipples." There's the Poppy Field night club, the wizard masquarading as a seductive chicken, the Flying Monkeys Hog Gang (We're just middle-aged motorcycle enthusiasts!"), and of course: Miss Piggy as the domanitrix Witch of the West.

The scene where the trap opens in front of Dorothy, not underneath, is far funnier than the similar scene in Team America. I love the way the floating monster head gets imbarassed and modestly asks her to jump in. My favorite scene involves Kermit the scarecrow being disembodied by the Flying Monkeys. That type of wacky dark imagery is what makes this film worthwhile.

Movie Review: The Muppets Wizard of oz
Summary: 4 Stars

Ok frist off

I just want to say that i'm a big muppets fan and that i have only seen the 1939 mgm film of oz. That said i like this film and i think pepole who give this film a chance will like it too. I kown it's not the muppet TV show. But for as long as the muppets have been around things have to change like everything that's been around for a long time (the Beatles, James bond, Startrek). But i thought that this film was relly good i laugh out loud at a lot of the inside jokes. Like when kermit ask the wizard are you related to Frank oz (by the way Frank oz use to do the voices for fozzy the bear and yoda). Yes some of the jokes in this movie may not be rated G stuff. But i think the muppets aren't going to be able to get away with the cheesy jokes they did on the muppet show.I did have some little problems with this film. Ralf the dog was not in this movie and i wish he had been becose he was one of the original muppets and he could'v been toto and pepe could be the voice of the wizard unsted of that un funnny guy they had. Anyway i watch this movie with my mom and i whold at lest rent it on dvd if your a muppet fan

Movie Review: Enjoyable Diversion
Summary: 4 Stars

All Dorothy (Ashanti) wants is to get out of Kansas and sing. She doesn't enjoy living in her uncle and aunts trailer and working in their diner. But when a tornado comes, she suddenly finds herself in a magical land trying to figure out a way to get home. Will she do it before the Muppet audition leaves town?

Ok, I went into the movie expecting a wacky version not exactly faithful to the original. I was actually pleasantly surprised at how faithful it was, getting a couple things right that the famous version with Judy Garland got wrong. Of course, they had to do their own take on many things, such as the Poppy Meadow Nightclub. Still, they managed to find places for all their classic characters while keeping the story going. The problem lies in that the humor is hit and miss, sometimes being entire too random (Quentin Tarantino anyone?) to be truly funny.

I'm a marginal Muppets fan since I sometimes find their jokes dull. This is yet another case of why. Definitely enjoyable, but not their best work.

Movie Review: OH LIGHTEN UP
Summary: 4 Stars

Um, if you cant see the humor in a Muppet talking about his nipples...you may be taking life a bit too seriously. Yeah maybe this movie has some adult humor but how soon you parents forget that the Muppet Show was originally an ADULT show that aired on in PRIME TIME!!! Stop being hypocritcal. You know the show's roots and now you're complaining that its regained some of the adult 'edge' because you're trying to shelter your kids. Please, do us all a favor...lighten up and stop whining. This movie is no cinematic masterpiece, but there times where I was in hysterics. Thats what the Muppets were about, making people of ALL ages laugh. I mean, its hard not to laugh at a talking shrimp in a hoody and Quentin Tarantino terrorizing Kermit with a ninja sword. Jim Henson probably IS rolling over in his grave...from LAUGHTER. And if you think Henson didnt have a dark side, I have three words for you: "The Dark Crystal." Do yourself a favor. Lighten up, watch this movie and have some laughs. Geez.

Movie Review: A word for parents: THE MUPPETS WERE NEVER MADE FOR CHILDREN
Summary: 4 Stars

I've only seen parts of this movie. While what I've seen doesn't compare to the older Muppet Movies, I just wanted to interject to parents everywhere that the "Muppets" were never made for children. It was a primetime variety show in the late '70s, definitely geered towards adults. I think parents confuse the Muppets with the Sesame Street characters which Henson did make for Children. Anyway, if you watched the original movies (Muppet Movie, Muppets Take Manhattan, and Great Muppet Caper), these all had numerous sections of adult humor that kids would not understand and is actually inappropriate for some children. But this was never the aim of the Muppets, to cater to children, as I mentioned before. So if you want wholesome viewing for children, stay away from any Muppets alltogether. But if you want to watch some genuinely funny Movies, yet still adult oriented, watch the original 3 Muppet Movies.
