Movie Review: One continent; One people
Summary: 4 Stars
This film is for the free spirited, revolutionary dreamer in all of us. Ernesto Geuvara, who later became the famous revolutionary Che Guevara, embarks on a rugged trip through South America with his buddy Alberto Granado. Their trip is not without hardship and dire situations as they lose their motorcycle and spend days without a dime to spend or proper food to consume. They literally take a leap into the unknown for nothing more than mere curiosity to discover a continent they know so very little of.
The picture is breathtaking as it elegantly showcases the beauty of South America; primal beauty; the sort of beauty that is not masked or enhanced. Some of the events in the film came off as contrived and unnecessary, though, which sort of dampened the exquisite flow of imagery and sound.
The story is mainly about friendship. Che's and Alberto's lives ran parallel for a while and circumstances pitted them against each other which in turn made them grow; this is the best coming of age story I have seen this year. It's also a story about not fearing life and that sometimes venturing into unknown territories is what leaves a permanent impression that changes our lives ... forever.
The film is in Spanish with English subtitles. I highly recommend it.
