Movie Review: Wonderful Movie

I bought this classic DVD after seeing this movie on TCM a while back. Being a big fan of Jean Arthur I was once again rewarded with a classic romantic comedy , the type that made Arthur so popular in Hollywood during the late 1930's and early 40's. The wartime romance between Arthur and Joel McCrea is very nicely done and the on-screen chemistry is very obvious as you watch this film. However the real joy is the always delightful Charles Coburn who steals the show as a middle-aged man looking for lodging in the busy suburbs of Washington DC during the war who invades Arthur's very small apartment as a renter. Coburn later sublets "half" of his room to Joel McCrea, unbeknownst to Jean Arthur that sets up the romance between the two. ( Jean Arthur and Charles Coburn also starred together in the hard to find but excellent comedy, The Devil in Miss Jones)
I highly recommend this film to anyone, especially those who are fans of Jean Arthur or Charles Coburn

I'd never even heard of this movie until I read Jean Arthur: The Actress No One Knew. The fact that she was nominated for an Oscar was enough for me to purchase it. I watched it four times the first week I owned it and I have probably watched it once a week in the months since. I laugh every time over the same things and somehow find something new to laugh at every time through. This movie also introduced me to the fabulously handsome (and what a sexy voice!) Joel McCrea, whom I've really taken a liking to. Charles Coburn, as the meddling old man, deserved his Oscar for this one. This movie is well-written, well-acted, well-directed. Romantic comedies just don't get any better.Movie Review: Timeless Classic

They don't make them like this anymore...they really don't! It is all so tastefully done, even when the actors are in bathrobes. It is sexy, erotic, funny, happy; all the ingredients of a romantic comedy, plus the magical chemistry between McRea and Arthur! And, all with their clothes on, no vulgarity in any sense of the word, no cursing or sexual inuendos. And, yet we can feel the love chemistry - amazing isn't it? I love, love, love this movie, and i'm so excited it's finally coming on DVD. I feel similarly to 'debalan89', because our family has lines that we have as jokes,etc. I think it's by far the best Jean Arthur movie - and Joel McCrea is great. Charles Coburn is fantastic. I wish there were more movies like this. I have searched, believe me!
As far as other reviewers who didn't find it funny; it seems hard to believe!
It's an undiscovered gem - i guess that's why it took so long for the DVD to arrive..

This movie is a topnotch comedy and one of the best to ever come out of Hollywood. It means a great cast and a great director, but the outstanding actor is Charles Coburn as a busy body poking his nose into other people`s private lives. There are many situations in the film that will have you smiling, chuckling, and laughing. Of course, Joel McCrea and Jean Arthur, are excellent performers. One of their best movies. Don`t miss this one. A must see.
