Movie Review: An outstanding, overlooked film
Summary: 4 Stars
A very well done film that probably did lousy box office when shocked parents blasted it's overuse of vulgarities and to be honest they were right! The film owes its tone to one person: Tom Noonan in his incomparable Frankenstein Monster softens rather than terrifies the heart. At LAST depicted as a hero/victim, the Monster is accepted by the kids as their protege, which motivates his decision to turn sides and save the world the exact moment it was in his hands. Where Dracula's exile into limbo is a descent into hell with Van Helsing as his demon for eternity, the Monster's departure (with accompanying warm music) is ascent into heaven, with the tears of "his" children shed at his passing. Morale: innocence recognizes innocence even when the outside is grotesque and love conquors what evil creates. Coupled with some pretty good but not overwhelming special effects and a collection of excellent child actors, particularly Ashley Bank as Phoebe, the film becomes cultish with only a millimeter's distance from classic in the genre.
