Movie Reviews of The Monster Squad (Two-Disc 20th Anniversary Edition)

Movie Review: "Give Me The Amulet You B**ch!!!"
Summary: 5 Stars

Andre Gower, Duncan Regehr (KILLER BUZZ), Stephen Macht (Stephen King's THE GRAVEYARD SHIFT), Stan Shaw (ROCKY), Tom Noonan (MANHUNTER), Ryan Lambert, Ashley Bank, Brent Chalem, Lisa Fuller, Michael Faustino, Robby Kiger, Mary Ellen Trainor, Leonardo Cimino (V), Jonathan Gries (NAPOLEON DYNAMITE), Sonia Curtis, Jack Gwillim (JASON & THE ARGONAUTS), Robert Lesser (DIE HARD), Carl Thibault, Tom Woodruff Jr. (OLD DOGS as the Gorilla that attacks Robin Williams, John Travolta and Seth Green), Michael MacKay (BATMAN & ROBIN as the scrawny version of Bane), Jason Hervey and Adam Carl star in Fred Dekker's (NIGHT OF THE CREEPS, ROBO COP 3) 1987 monster rally cult classic; THE MONSTER SQUAD. The main plot is Count Dracula (portrayed perfectly by Duncan Regehr) is out to dominate the world with an amulet he needs to find. With help from the classic monsters; Frankenstein's Monster, The Wolf Man, Creature From the Black Lagoon and The Mummy. Meanwhile, a group of young kids named the Monster Squad discover gruesome murders and break-ins in town and become suspicious. Now it is up to the Monster Squad to stop "the creatures of the night" quote by Dracula, from ruling the world.

This movie is very funny and chock full of horror trivia (same with NIGHT OF THE CREEPS). Perfect example is when Sean (Andre Gower) notices the name Alucard. He writes it backwards and notices it spells Dracula. This is a nod to the terrible SON OF DRACULA (1943) starring Lon Chaney Jr. You have to look carefully at this in the movie, on the map of the town you can see a college named Chaney College, obviously named after Lon Chaney Sr. and Jr. Another cool example is when the Wolf Man (in human form, played by Jonathan Gries) is asking the police to lock him up in a cell. A nod to the great HOUSE OF DRACULA (1945) starring Lon Chaney Jr., John Carradine, Onslow Stevens, Lionel Atwill and Glenn Strange. 1 thing I love about this movie is the scene where Sean (Gower) asks his father (Macht) if he can see GROUNDHOG DAY PART 12. I bet you know what that makes fun of. Like Fred Dekker said; "... This was by the way years before the Bill Murray movie. Shane (Black) and I (Fred Dekker) were just making fun of the holiday themed horror movies of that time." A great piece of trivia is when Fred Dekker thought of this idea, he wanted to use the original looks of the old monsters but Universal did not want to make this movie. Then here comes Stan Winston to the rescue. Winston was able to re-design the monsters in order to be "clear on who they were and to keep us out of court" quote by producer Jonathan A. Zimbert.

As for special features, we have of course a widescreen picture, 2 audio commentaries:

1.) Writer/Director Fred Dekker and D.P. Bradford May.

2.) Writer/Director Fred Dekker, Andre Gower (Sean), Ashley Bank (Phoebe) and Ryan Lambert (Rudy).

A rare interview with Frankenstein.

Theatrical trailers.

Storyboards.

Deleted/Extended Scenes: The only good one is watching the Creature From the Black Lagoon's spit-up of fish and how it could not work out with the effects. The other deleted scenes are not interesting. A title card in the deleted scenes mention a cool sounding deleted scene where Van Helsing battles Dracula. I hope that footage gets found soon, I would love to see it.

A 5 part documentary titled MONSTER SQUAD: FOREVER! on the making of the film which includes interviews with Writer/Director Fred Dekker, Producer Jonathan A. Zimbert, Duncan Regehr (Dracula), Andre Gower (Sean), Ryan Lambert (Rudy), Ashley Bank (Phoebe), Frankenstein makeup artist Tom Woodruff Jr. (Creature From the Black Lagoon), Tom Noonan (Frankenstein) and more.

Part I: THE MONSTER MAKER; an informative piece on telling who Fred Dekker was and his early films: HOUSE (1986) starring William Katt, George Wendt, Richard Moll and Kay Lenz and NIGHT OF THE CREEPS (1986) starring Jason Lively, Steve Marshall, Jill Whitlow, Tom Atkins, Wally Taylor, Ken Heron, Bruce Solomon, Vic Polizos, Robert Kino, Allan J. Kayser, Alice Cadoggan, Dick Miller and David Paymer.

Part II: THE MONSTER MAKERS; a telling of Universal's rejection and how the designs had to be changed for each monster.

Part III: THE MONSTERS & THE SQUAD; a telling on how the casting for Dracula, Frankenstein and the kids went.

Part IV: LIGHTS, CAMERA, MONSTERS; interviews/shout-outs towards the visual effects men, the director of photography, the music composer and others. Also tells of the disappointing flop of the movie's theatrical release.

Part V: MONSTER SQUAD FOREVER; interviews with fans who grew up watching this movie and how the cult following gave the birth to this great DVD.

Infinity out of infinity star rating, baby!
