Movie Reviews of The Mist

Movie Review: King's Films Still Pack A Punch
Summary: 5 Stars

I am not sure when it became "cool" to bash Stephen King, but most of the reviews here that do are shallow and contrite. Much like the overlooked Dreamcatcher, The Mist takes the viewer on a thrill ride packed with characters who represent the extremes in everyday life. But isn't that what you are supposed to do in a film about the microcosm of society pressed into two hours? I am not going to give any simple recap of the film, because reviews like that are useless. Here's what you need to know...if you like creepy, gut-wrenching horror that packs an intelligent and unapologetic punch, then The Mist is right up your alley. This is the fun, classic King at his best (a la Creep Show). There were two items that bothered me about the film, however. The "creature" too similar to the ones from Dreamcatcher....and, if we're going to use a "parallel dimension" as the cause for the creatures...I think more creativity could have gone into their design. That being said, this movie is clearly in my top ten horror films of all time list. Highly Recommended!!!

Movie Review: cruel and agonizing
Summary: 5 Stars

this film is perfect even if some people did not like the final moments. Maybe not an exactly scary movie but an agonizing one. You follow the despair of people who dont know exactly what is going on when a strange, supernatural mist literally invades a small town and envelopes everything on a horrifying and almost living shroud. A group trapped in a supermarket by the mist suddenly begins to be attacked by incredible monsters (in spectacular effects)apparently coming from some unknown zone inside the mist. Fastly the group splits in two factions, those who are afraid and do nothing and those who are afraid and intend to take some action to scape from this twilight zone-situation, facing the unknown (oh, there is an explanation, the old cliche, an obscure military experience...). Usually the good guys win and have a happy end but here cruelly the good guys loose, taking the wrong decisions... really one of the best horror movies of this century.

Movie Review: Justified hype
Summary: 5 Stars

The cover of this DVD gives credence to the shocking ending. I was enticed by the trailer and gave this film a go while believing that I had been exposed to every kind of ending ever captured on film. I've seen gore, blood, mystery, blah, blah, blah. Nothing surprises me anymore. My hope was merely to be entertained. The movie boasts a depth of character, so-so special effects and an alluring story. A few good jumps, but not entirely 'scary'. Still, it held my interest. The ending lived up to the hype. I was expecting pretty much anything except for what happened, and I sat stunned through the end-credits while asking myself, "Did they really do that?" The ending is so shocking that I literally do not have the proper words. I dig that in a film. Show me something that hasn't been done before. Give me something to think about, and I'm sold.

Mr. Darabont and Mr. King sold me.

Movie Review: Excellent
Summary: 5 Stars

Just wanted to cast my 5-star vote for this excellent movie. I'm no conossoiur, but I enjoyed it thoroughly; my mouth was agape several times from pure shock at the story twists.

Stephen King has definitely overcome his problem with crappy endings (I'm thinking mainly of the giant spider in "It") - The Mist has probably the best (surprise) ending I've seen, which pushes "Birdy" (Matthew Modine, Nicholas Cage) out of the #1 spot for "best endings in a movie" of all time. ;)

Also note: I watched the DVD over a month after I bought it...and it froze up repeatedly throughout the movie. The return period had elapsed, so I had to keep it. A year later (same DVD player) I watched it and was pleased and shocked that I had no issues. Glad I never fired off that angry letter to the manufacturer.

Movie Review: Foggy Weather
Summary: 5 Stars

Once again Stephen King hates for any of his movies to end "Happy Ever After." This movie wouldn't spoil his twisted sense of humor as usual. The mysterious mist soon arrives in town from out of nowhere, leaving the town resident's dumbfounded. Seeking shelter at town's hardware store seems to be get too crowd before residents decide to venture out among the "Mist." With casualties becoming an issue a few members decide to venture outside the safety of the hardware store to seek help from nearby National Guard Unit. Little do the town residents realize their local NGU is the cause of all their problems? The storylines ends just as twisted as Mr. King's promising signature hand at work, leaving you guessing how it will all end.
