Movie Reviews of The Miracle Worker

Movie Review: A true gem
Summary: 5 Stars

Artur Penn directed this film and probably his best work. This film is one landmark in American cinema.
The approach of Penn is supported by a haunting story about a deaf mude girl and the hard process of learning with a teacher who has strong visual limitations,Helen Keller.
Undoubtly, Truffaut with The wild child 1969 , makes a very close approach than Penn, but in this case, The miracle worker has a cast very difficult to find today even impossible. The couple Anne Bancroft one of my twenty favorite american actress in any age, and Patty Duke as the child made a superb performing.
Previously they had performed this play in the theatre. Watch by example the high raising dramatic sequences are filmed as is the viewer was in a theatre hall, the camera is just in the floor. And this is another tribute to Citizen Kane.
The mude sequence ten minutes where they turn around the table where Patty must to eat in the right way is unforgettable. The camera's handle and the angles of shooting are a milestone in the legend cinema.
The film doesn't get old and it's a special gift for every one to have this DVD. The transfer was very well made.
One of the supreme movies ever.
Don't miss this one.
A truly classic film.

Movie Review: Gripe w/DVD not Film
Summary: 5 Stars

This incredible film takes you on a roller coaster of emotion, & hopefully, challenges any preconceptions of "limits" of persons with disabilities!

My gripes concen the DVD. There are no English subtitles, though there are French & Spanish! Considering this is Helen Keller's story, this ommission is not merely unthinkable, but insulting to anyone, now & in the future, who wants to enjoy this film & also has a hearing impairment!

Sadly Anne Bancroft is gone, but Patty Duke is alive & well. Yet there is no commentary or interview clip! I'm sure she may tire of speaking of it, but with the chance to preserve this story & extraordinary perfomance for the future, I'm certain somethig can be arranged!

Now, if they'll put out the TV remake w/Melissa Gilbert as Helen & Patty Duke (this time as Annie Sullivan). Though not up to Bancroft/Duke, it is still well worth watching, even if it's only to see Duke take on the ohter role. Gilbert got to break away from Laura Ingalls Wilder (which I loved as well) with gusto too!
And this remake bests the more recent one with the girl from the pepsi comercial hands down!

Movie Review: Uplifting and inspirational
Summary: 5 Stars

The classic story of deaf and blind Helen Keller (Patty Duke) and her teacher, Anne Sullivan (Anne Bancroft). Pitied for her handicaps and thought to be retarded, Helen has been indulged and left in ignorance, resulting in a spoiled child without any concept of language. Anne, herself raised in a home for blind and deaf children, must be a ruthless taskmaster in order to use the child's physical needs as a primer from which to teach her what language is so that communication might follow.

Bancroft and Duke carry this film on their shoulders and they do a magnificent job. They share many intense, physically exhausting scenes together. The sequence in which Anne grapples with Helen over dinner in order to teach her to follow basic rules of etiquette is a good example--it is unsentimental and the actresses are totally committed to their performances. Director Arthur Penn and screenwriter William Gibson (who adapted his own stage play) have done remarkable jobs as well to produce an uplifting, inspirational film that eschews saccharine and phoniness./

Movie Review: The Miracle Worker (1962)
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this movie being as I was taking an American Sign Language course and needed insight into the life of Helen Keller. As far as the story ITSELF goes, the movie didn't help me much in terms of who Helen Keller really was (throughout her life) as it only goes into a bit of time with Anne Sullivan. HOWEVER, the acting performances of both Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke are absolutely PHENOMENAL!!!! Even my young children wanted to see the movie over and over. You really feel as though you were watching the evolution of an intelligent, completely spoiled deaf/mute child into a fully communicating individual, not just a "monkey" as they made her out to be. (but that's as far as it goes; it does not elaborate on any events subsequent to that). So, as far as utilizing this movie for a research paper, I would not recommend it. But for more insight into some of the difficulties of the deaf community, this is a wonderful movie to "be on the outside, looking in." Highly, HIGHLY recommended.

Movie Review: My favorite movie of all time...
Summary: 5 Stars

If I had only one movie to take with me to a desert island, this would be it. Of course, different things appeal to different people, but this resonates with me. Patty Duke's performance is simply incredible, breathtaking. The astounding generosity shown by Annie Sullivan... I have studied the lives of Annie & Helen and this movie is just the tip of the iceberg. Annie was a devil, and Helen is remembered as this a sweet old lady. Actually, Helen learned to speak & was a socialist, and could work crowds into an absolute frenzy. She was brilliant & beautiful- Mark Twain was in love with her & always trying to get her into bed. But anyway...for me the wonder of giving a person who is deaf & blind the whole world, showing the nuts & bolts of it- no other ending of a film gives me the thrill this one does. Pure ideas, pure passion, pure human heart to heart- a perfect screenplay, not a wasted word or moment in the whole film- PERFECTION as far as I'm concerned!
