Movie Reviews of The Million Dollar HotelMovie Review: remarkable movie of societies outcasts Summary: 5 Stars
I wasn't expecting much from this movie and was surprised to see an honest portrayal of segments of our society who have no hope and how they are taken advantage of by wealthy moguls and bullies.
Movie Review: quite simply one of the most beautiful, unusual films ever Summary: 5 Stars
Weird, wonderful love story full of totally unique characters. Brilliant! The interviews on the DVD are also quite fascinating.
Movie Review: Pride cometh before a fall Summary: 4 Stars
I would gladly have given this movie 5 stars if not for one thing. After all, the cinematography was gorgeous and inventive; Davies and Jovovich were marvelous and creative and experimental; the first several minutes of the film, anchored by U2's "The First Time," are so beautiful and painful as to almost demand a pause before the rest of the movie can continue. This one thing, though, mars the film: Mel Gibson. It has been noted by several reviewers here that Gibson bad-mouthed the film before an American distributor had the chance to pick it up. For once, Gibson was remarkably perceptive about his role in the film, though he mistakenly laid the blame on others involved in the production. I think his subconscious recognition was that his own performance was truly awful. His violent antics are completely unconvincing, as is the most embarrassing scene in the movie, his explanation of his backbrace. Part of this may be Wenders fault. He clearly put too much confidence in Gibson's ability to pull off the scene and the role in general. The bulk of blame, though, goes to Gibson himself--too arrogant to recognize that the reason the film doesn't completely succeed is because he failed to bring a belief in his own role to the screen. I am shocked that so many reviewers laud his half-hearted, disinterested, all-smoke-and-no-fire performance as being anything more than the farce it is. He is a pop star; his successful movies, even when they are very good films (like Braveheart), are POP 'flicks.' Million Dollar Hotel is not a pop film; it's destiny, much like the current release AI, is not to sweep pop culture off its feet, but to subtly make a comment about the beauty of faith and love in a world that is falling apart. How disappointing that Wenders should be shamed for delicately and lovingly delivering this message by one of the most notoriously spoiled brats of pop cinema. Mr. Gibson can go back and make a Lethal Weapon 5 for all I care; he did nothing for THIS great film.
Movie Review: a 4 Star hotel. Summary: 4 Stars
I have never smiled sooo much through a 'Mystery film'.
This is a very cool movie.
Many have labeled it as an "Artsy" movie, to my ARTSY usually means abstract or undefined. This movie is straight forward, a guy is dead in the begining of the movie and the detective is trying to find out who killed him or if it was suicide. Very basic, but what is NOT basic is the suspects / witnesses.
Each one is living in his own world, you have the mentaly challenged, the [...] artiest, the one who thinks he's the 5th beatle. So the enjoyment is seeing how the detective *who is just as strange as the other charecters* tries to get information out of them. So you get a little romance, and alot of smiles through this experiance.
I personally enjoyed it, espcially with the fact that you hear Bono singing almost throught the whole movie :D
Why did I give it 4 & not 5 stars?
I was not too happy with the extra features, they did not title anyone when they are speaking, so if you don't know the names of the actors, producers ect..then your out of luck. Also the audio in the extra features was a bit unstable, low to high depeding on who is being interviewed..AND I was VERY disapointed not to find at least ONE music video for the movie from Bono, there are songs in the movie that Bono had written FOR the movie, it would have helped if they actually Interviewed Bono, since he is a co-writter in the film to give us more insight on the inspiration for this project.
Other than that, it is a very cool movie, with a very believeable cast, I mean you actually believe this guys are NUTS, its fantastic. And for a murder/thriller, it actually dosen't have that much violence or blood in it...but alot of smiles.
Movie Review: A title for your review. Summary: 4 Stars
I happened to tune into this movie about halfway through at 4 in the morning. The first thing I noticed was Mel Gibson, who turned out to be the only thing I didn't really like about the movie, and I was about to change the channel, but the character Tom kept me interested. What unfolded before me was not an "art film," but a love story and a slightly comical, ironic murder 'mystery' (mostly mysterious because I didn't see the first half). The character Eloise was probably my favorite and in my opinion the most moving element of the movie, partly because she reminds me of someone I used to know--a real person whose emotion I could feel. I didn't even know this was a "U2 movie" or that more than one song on the soundtrack was by them until I read some of the reviews this morning, which was probably a good thing; admittedly, I would have been a little turned off by the fact if I'd known. But the soundtrack fits for the most part and I didn't find it dull. I would definitely describe this film as a "more feral version of American Beauty," as a previous reviewer has stated, in many aspects. One last thing: I find it incredibly amusing how a lot of the people giving bad reviews seem to think this is a Mel Gibson movie; IT'S NOT. They're outraged by the simple idea that the high and mighty Mel Gibson could have accepted such a 'horrible' role, and then they have the gall to complain about pretentiousness and how they couldn't find a deeper meaning if there was one; they should stick to Lethal Weapon, I guess. If you really want to enjoy this movie, a brain is helpful.
