Movie Reviews of The Marx Brothers Collection (A Night at The Opera/A Day at The Races/A Night in Casablanca/Room Service/At the Circus/Go West/The Big Store)Movie Review: A NIGHT AT THE OPERA/A DAY AT THE RACES/AT THE CIRCUS Summary: 5 Stars
A NIGHT AT THE OPERA (1935) Directed by Sam Wood. Script by George
Kaufman, Morrie Ryskind and Buster Keaton. Art Direction by Cedric
Gibbons. Sound by Douglas Shearer. Produced by Irving Thalberg.
Starring Groucho Marx, Chico Marx, Kitty Carlisle, Allan Jones, Sig
Ruman, Margaret Dumont, King Baggot, Gino Corrado, Bud Geary, Billy
Gilbert, Jonathan Hale and Harpo Marx in the role of Tomasso.
The Marx brothers help a young singing couple become succesful opera
singers by generally making a nuisance of themselves, disrupting an
opera and driving poor Sig Ruman mad. Along the way, Harpo and Chico
mingle among poor Italian immigrants, play the piano and harp while
Groucho's room aboard a luxury liner gets appallingly crowded. Groucho
insults Margaret Dumont every chance he gets and she never quite
notices. Allan Jones plays Zeppo. This is the one where
Groucho--negotiating Jone's singing contract--asks about a sanity claus
and Chico laughs saying that there is no Santi Claus. Several musical
numbers break up the hyjinks which drove this viewer up the wall as a
kid but has now learned to appreciate.
A comedy classic and a cinematic great.
A DAY AT THE RACES (1937) Produced and directed by Sam Wood. Art
direction by Cedric Gibbons. Sound by Douglas Shearer. Stunts by
Richard Farnsworth. Produced by Irving Thalberg.
Starring Groucho Marx, Chico Marx, Allan Jones, Maureen O'Sullivan,
Margaret Dumont, Douglas Dumbrille, Sig Ruman, Charles Trowbridge, King
Baggot, Kenny Baker, Gino Corrado, Dorothy Dandridge, Vivian Dandridge,
Frankie Darro, Richard Farnsworth, Byron Foulger, Darby Jones, Carole
Landis and Harpo Marx in the role of Stuffy.
The Marx brothers help a young couple--one of whom sings---become
succesful owners of a santitarium and win a horse race by generally
making a nuisance of themselves, disrupting a horse race and driving
poor Sig Ruman mad. Along the way, all three mingle among impovershed
Blacks. Chico plays the piano while Harpo plays the harp. Groucho
insults Margaret Dumont every chance he gets and she never quite
notices. Allan Jones plays Zeppo. This is the one where Groucho tells
Maureen O'Sullivan that, for her, he would make love to a crocodile and
then tries to seduce Margaret Dumont. Douglas Dumbrille is a geniunely
unlikable villain---surprisingly so for a comedy. Frankie Darro plays
a villainous jockey!! And yes that IS Darby Jones from I WALKED WITH A
ZOMBIE and Charles Trowbridge from THE MUMMY'S HAND!! Several musical
numbers break out and are all very impressive. O'Sullivan must have
wondered why she ever left Tarzan for this.
A comedy classic and a cinematic great.
AT THE CIRCUS (1939) Directed by Edward Buzzell. Art Direction by
Cedric Gibbons. Sound by Douglas Shearer. Produced by Mervyn LeRoy.
Starring Groucho Marx, Chico Marx, Kenny Baker, Eve Arden, Margaret
Dumont, Nat Pendleton, Charles Gemora, Fritz Feld, James Burke, Willie
Best, Murdock MacQuarrie, Larry Steers and Harpo Marx in the role of
Punchy.
The Marx brothers help a young singing couple become successful circus
performers by generally making a nuisance of themselves, disrupting a
classic music concert, recovering stolen money and driving an
unrecognizable Nat Pendleton--two years away from immortality in BUCK
PRIVATES--mad. Along the way, Chico and Harpo mingle among some more
impovershed Blacks where Chico plays the piano and Harpo plays the
harp. While Groucho insults Margaret Dumont every chance he gets while
she never notices, he also finds himself dealing with sarcastic and
crooked Eve Arden as they walk on the ceiling. Don't ask. Kenny Baker
plays Allan Jones playing Zeppo. Fritz Feld plays Sig Ruman. Poor
Margaret Dumont is really put through the wringer in this one and there
is a classic bit with an orchestra floating out to sea. Groucho sings
Lydia the tattoooed lady. Charles Gemora shows up in his gorilla suit
and there are several snappy musical numbers.
Supposedly the Marx brothers were never as good as when Irving
Thalberg was their producer but frankly this film is just as good as A
DAY AT THE RACES or A NIGHT AT THE OPERA. It is not as if the Marx
brothers had more than one plot that they reused again and again. It
made no difference as long as they were up to their usual antics. The
formula was idiot proof and all that was needed was, clever jokes,
superb musical numbers, Margaret Dumont and the Marx brothers.
Though if you ask me, the loss of Zeppo was the problem.
Another comedy classic.
