Movie Reviews of The Man in the Iron Mask

Movie Review: Five Stars
Summary: 5 Stars

I don't get it... 3 stars here and 4 stars there. Nice little swashbuckler. Don't like his teeth. Too many funny accents. Ladeeda.

For your information, this is one of the finest films ever created. Had I been the writer or director, I could die now in peace. It is a perfect story. It is written in the gnostic, courtly tradition. The illicit unattainable love most closely resembles that of the Father for the Madonna. The Son who is brought into the world has a dual nature and is king.

I think after Titanic it's maybe fashionable to prove you're super intellectual by not being impressed by diCaprio's acting. I'm too old and grouchy to be in love with diCaprio (Gabriel Byrnes is another matter). But he acted magnificently, as did all the other major players.

This movie has so many secrets and corners (which are not merely very cool, but also highly significant), that it's hard to write a review without writing a spoiler. But I'll give it a shot.

So this is another take on the father quest, an Odyssey. The DiCaprios represent aspects of the father-son relationship. The DiCaprio who sits on the throne doesn't deserve it, and does not recognize the nature of kingship, thinking it rooted in royal blood. The DiCaprio who deserves the throne does not realize he is the Christ/king and does not want the throne. The son does not know the Father, thinks he is dead. The father only sees one aspect of the son. But he has unswerving faith in the son's redemption, and this faith is also rooted in his perfect love for the Mother, the Madonna, the rose of the cross.

Porthos, Athos and Aramis represent aspects of the male character. All of them are noble, true and great men, but none of them have the same nobility of character as their old buddy d'Artagnan. They all feel incomplete. Aramis for all his prayer and seeking cannot find forgiveness. (And why does he require so much forgiveness?) Porthos is a lover of life, unabashedly lusts after women, battles and good clothes, but he cannot reconcile himself to growing old. And Athos, perhaps the greatest of them, is resentful that he has been betrayed, first by the king who fails to serve the people, and then by d'Artagnan who still insists on defending the king... even after the king is responsible for the death of his only and noble son. This he understandably cannot forgive. Athos and the others can love only one aspect of the Son. The Father can love the son in his totality. And yet it is their efforts apparently at odds with the king which finally unite the Father with his Son. And this process also raises their level of awareness.

D'Artagnan is an enigma... he is obviously a deep and brave and noble man. And yet he has this curious, superficial, blind devotion to his job. As Musketeers they swore to defend the king, sure. But d'Artagnan sticks to the word of his vow even after the king's traitorous conduct renders the vow meaningless, and this is so inconsistent with his depth of character otherwise. "Why do you defend him, d'Artagnan? Why?" Aramis and Athos both express confusion about it, but Athos is too overcome by grief to figure it out. Why doesn't d'Artagnan just wake up and smell the Rose?

It all has to come right in the end, of course. But I really leave the film feeling that life is like that... so get over your thing about the funny accents and crooked teeth.

Movie Review: A wonderfully beautiful movie
Summary: 5 Stars

If it wasn't for having cable, I do not believe I would have ever seen this movie. For one I am not a big fan of Leonardo Dicap. Yet, the misleading title, Man in the Iron Mask, is what seemed to bar my curiosity of wanting to see it. It sounded like another one of the glamorous post renaissance movies that was popular in the late 90s. If anything more than that I imagined it to be a strange super hero story. And I did not know that John Malkovich and Lolita's main character, Jeremy Irons was in it.

However, I am glad to have finally seen this film. It is a wonderful twist and other side of the awesome legend and adventure of the three musketeers. Even Leonardo DiCaprio did exceptionally okay in it.
The costumes and sets were incredibly matched to the period they had once downed.

As a living history lover of another history, the American War of Northern Aggression, the role of the musketeers in this film greatly reminded me of such true figures as Major General JEB Stuart, Major Heroes Von Burke of Stuart's staff, General Robert E Lee, Major General George Pickett, Lt. General Nathan Bedford Forrest, Lt. General Joseph Wheeler, Colonel John Mosby, Lt. General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, and other leaders in the Confederate War for Independence.

It was during the War of Northern Aggression when the gallantry, chivalry, and romance, that the French Musketeers made famous, had taken its last stand. Gone forever from then was a knighthood of men that lived and died gloriously.
What of the Northern side of the war? Though many Northern leaders may have been as good of men as any, they lacked that ode to land and home, that flourish of flag and saber, and the brilliantly lit devotion to a cause bigger than they. Whether for political motives or duty or as military service to their government, even the most flashy of Northern officers like for example Armstrong Custer, did not meet the brand of fire of that fire eater States Rights Gist sacrificed with or the Old Blue Light that described the true character of Stonewall Jackson.
Compare the memoirs of Southern officers with those of Northern officers and you might even agree though you might not like.
Study the photographs and paintings of the opposing sides and you'll also notice the manic differences between the plumed hat Southern cavalryman and the simple light blue trousers and blue sack coat of the Federal soldiers.

These were some of the things that this Civil War history buff noticed when watching Man in the Iron Mask.
As a Southron man I did really love to see a movie that beheld the same proud traits of manhood and honor in this movie and the historically accurate story behind Gods and Generals.

Movie Review: Athos, Porthos, Aramis, and Dartagnan VS a king and his army
Summary: 5 Stars

If youre going to see this film you are going to have a blast. The story of THE MAN IN THE IRON MASK is the best adventure of the four musketeers. If you dont know the first half of the story well let me tell you A long time ago the most trusted soldiers in the world were the musketeers. But the best out of all of them were Aramis the priest, Athos the lover, and Porthos the ex pirate. But when the Cardinal dismisses all musketeers, the three musketeers will not give up their uniforms and now they are wanted by the Cardinals guards. One day all three meet a young man named Dartagnan who wants to be a musketeer like his father was. They tell him the whole story and he is sadden by what he hears but joins the three musketeers on their quest to kill the Cardinal and his guards and bring back the musketeers.
The man in the iron mask: The musketeers are the kings guards now. But a lot has changed. Dartagnan is the captain of all musketeers and his king is barbarian that only cares about himself. Athos is an old man that lives with his son. Porthos is a drunk and wonders the town for sex. And Aramis is the leader of a small group of men that want to kill the king. This movie is about the friendship of the old musketeers and how they live different lives, but at the end they draw their swords at the kings musketeers and scream All for one and one for all!

Movie Review: " Nobility Is Born In The Heart ~ The Greatest Mystery Of Life Is Who We Truly Are"
Summary: 5 Stars

After a cursory scrolling through the previous 190 reviews on this film I've come to the conclusion that the '98 release, `The Man in the Iron Mask' is one of those movies you either love or hate. As for me, I love it!

The scenery is exquisite, the soundtrack inspirational and uplifting, the storyline epic and filled with pathos and the cast is amazing. Gerard Depardeieu (Porthos), John Malkovich (Athos), Jeremy Irons (Aramis) and Gabriel Bryne (D'Artagnan) breathe new life into Dumas' musketeers mythos. Seeing these four legendary warriors gallantly charge King Louie's muskets as they fire from point blank range was as heroic a scene as I've ever seen captured on film. It gives me goose bumps just to think about it.

As for Leonardo DiCaprio, he is magnificent in the dual role of King Louis XIV of France and his twin brother Philippe. His ability to appear so arrogant, hateful and despicable as King Louie one minute and transform himself into the timid, emotional and caring Philippe a moment later is truly amazing. This is by far my favorite DiCaprio performance.

This is a film that can be watched over and over again without losing its emotional impact on the viewer. 'The Man in the Iron Mask' is a keeper, I wholeheartedly recommend that you add it to your personal DVD library.

Movie Review: A WONDERFUL Movie
Summary: 5 Stars

I LOVED this movie.I not saying this because Leonardo was in it,I'm saying it because of the Musketeers.I read most of Dumas's books and I'm only eleven so I know much about the Musketeers and their history, so this mavie was very captivating.I like the romance between the Queen Mother, Anne of Austria, and the captian of the King's Musketeers, D'Artagnan. i liked how D'Artagnan treated her like a human, not like King Louis treated his " mistresses". I liked the whole thing with the rose and the scene in the chapel. The end was surprising and very sad. The acting was also good ,even though Porthos was the only one whose accent was French, because his actor was a Frenchman. The other's had a slight accent, but they were English actors. Leonardo didn't have ANY accent at all.??Isn't a French King surposed to have a French accent?? I always thought so.There was very good acting in movie, but I must say that Leonardo did a better job as Philippe then as Louis.I also must say i have a favorite character, the same as in the books,D'Artagnan.I give credit to Gabriel Byrne, the man who played D'Artagnan, because it had to be hard to look sad all the time. THIS MOVIE WAS ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES I SEEN and I have seen many movies!!!!!!!!
