Movie Reviews of The Man In The Iron Mask [1939]

Movie Review: Only Game in Town
Summary: 5 Stars

The movie gets five stars, while the "Movieology" dvd version gets between three and four stars. The bottom line with "The Man in the Iron Mask (1939)" is that this version is the only dvd available. I saw this movie a few times on tv in my youth and absolutely loved it. Several years ago, I was finally able to obtain a pricey VHS copy, and now, thanks to Firecake Entertainment, I can enjoy the movie in dvd format. Yes, I certainly wish somebody will eventually restore it and that the quality of the print would be much better, but until that time, this dvd is the only game in town and it was offered at a very reasonable price. As for the movie, it is Louis Hayward at his best, with Joseph Schildkraut stealing the movie.

Summary of The Man In The Iron Mask [1939]

D'Artagnan and The Three Musketeers return for one final adventure in James (FRANKENSTEIN) Whales' fantastic swashbuckling adventure...

The year is 1658 and King Louis XIV rules France with tyranny and profligacy. With his reputation diminishing and sovereignty in question, Louis fears being overthrown by his twin brother, Phillipe, a much respected heir.

Snatched by the Kings guards, Phillipe is imprisoned within the walls of the Bastille. His head encased in a dreaded iron mask. Only the Four Musketeers stand between him and a living death as they must execute his daring rescue, for both Phillipe and the better of France, in Alexandre Dumas' amazing and adventurous conclusion to the D'Artagnan chronicles.
