Movie Reviews of The Making of "Miss Saigon"Movie Review: JUST NOT ENOUGH!!!! Please Release DVD of Miss Saigon with Original London Cast!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
Lea Salonga was born to play Miss Saigon.
Cameron Mackintosh (Broadway producer), Alain Boublil & Claude-Michel Schönberg (writer and composer, respectively, of the legendary "Les Mis"), and Nicholas Hynter (acclaimed stage director) were looking for a young girl who had, according to Mackintosh, "enormous charm and lungs of steel." They held auditions in New York, Los Angeles, and Honolulu. Despite the turnout, the girls who had auditioned did not possess the range nor skill required to sing European music.
However, the painstaking search of Miss Saigon ended in Manila (the last audition site) where they discovered Lea Salonga and her childhood friend, Monique Wilson. They came to the right place! Monique was good, but the obvious first choice was Lea. Her pure voice was perfect for the role of Kim, but her interpretation of the songs was the ultimate difference--there was maturity, emotional intensity, and power.
The documentary showed interviews, the cast meet and greet, first days of rehearsals, the beginnings of stage production, and singing rehearsals with a live orchestra (this was really fun to watch, but too limited!). It was a wonderful look behind the scenes; it showed how much effort, manpower, and time was needed for the production of a big staged musical. And yet, the documentary had left me wanting only more!!!
I can't believe there isn't a DVD Concert of Miss Saigon--like Les Mis. For posterity sake, Mackintosh should release a DVD of the musical with the original London cast! The original London cast recording is great to listen to and always brings tears to my eyes, but the imagery is not fully appreciated compared to a live stage musical. The documentary provides just snippets of the preview and of opening day, (which happened to be on my birthday!), so viewers who haven't seen this musical may feel cheated. At least, I do.
Hopefully, one day a DVD musical (of the original cast!!! Please!) will be released--with more behind the scenes footage. That's what fans want, because this DVD by itself is not enough! Although if you're a fan of Miss Saigon, I would recommend that this DVD be added to your collection. It's still entertaining to watch, especially during Lea's intensive auditions and the singing rehearsals with the live orchestra. Further, it's a revealing process of how stage musicals are made.
Highly recommended!
