Movie Reviews of The MachinistMovie Review: I haven't slept.... in a year. Summary: 5 Stars
I'm about ready to sue Scott Kosar. I don't know how he knows me but..... just joking Scott, you're brilliant. I was able to relate to this movie in so many ways. I recently, still going through a little bit, went through a very dark traumatic phase. I couldn't sleep for days, i didn't eat so i got dangerously thin, i began to think everybody was conspiring against me, i heard and saw things that weren't there.... but enough about me. If you listened to my personal jabbering than you probably have the plot of the Machinist in a handbasket. However, i know what my source of insomnia is the product of, we don't know why these things are happening to Trevor. Trevor Reznik hasen't slept in a year. This is a witty pschological suspense story that shouldn't be looked over. Christian Bale's performance is utterly breathtaking and the dark mood is very nice as well. If you're into mystery, intrigue, suspense, or horror then give this movie a shot. You won't be disappointed. I wonder though, could the writer of this movie secretly be Trevor Reznik? It seems to me that to write a piece like this that a person would have had to have been in a situation like this once. I know.

Movie Review: Not for "loosers" Summary: 5 Stars
The Machinist isn't for small kids, or adults with pre-schooler intellects, who don't know that "loser" has just one "o" in it, that "loser's life" needs an apostrophe to show ownership, or that "moses" and the titles of TV shows are proper nouns and should be capitalized.
It is not necessarily a movie about psychosis, either. It seemed to me to be about sleep deprivation, a good bringer-on of psychotic behavior and hallucinations for sure. It's about a sane man who has something everyone needs to have, for everybody else's sake, to separate us bipeds from the snakes in the grass. Trevor Reznik has something that's going out of style, I'm afraid. Hence the startling number of people who don't get it, or find themselves struggling to "read anything into" it, even among professional reviewers for fairly large city newspapers. The best rags all gave it an uncategorical A+, however. This movie is a stunner from start to finish.
I gave THE MACHINIST ten minutes on my living room wall clock, thinking it was going to be too depressing to endure. I didn't even notice the time sweeping by. Loved it! Christian Bale has a new fan here.
Movie Review: Don't give it all away Summary: 5 Stars
If you want to truly enjoy and fully appreciate THE MACHINIST (a production that I consider to be one of the best films of 2004), I would highly suggest that you track down a theatre that might happen to be showing this entertaining feature. Christian Bale deserves an award for his outstanding performance (not to mention the physical state that he depleted himself to when taking on the role).
WARNING: Avoid reading some the earlier reviews of this film that have been submitted on this site! The authors end up giving away far too much of the plot in their ramblings! They should know better...how would they feel if somebody exposed so much of the plot--and the film's vital twists and turns--to them before they went to see the movie?!
But even if you know some of the details, you'll still thoroughly enjoy THE MACHINIST. I've already seen it once (and therefore know the "secrets" that lie in its running time), but would love to see it on the big screen again...and I will most definitely be including this one in my library on the day that it finally gets released on dvd. The film has my highest recommendation.
Movie Review: Great mindbender that just about merits Bale's performance Summary: 5 Stars
I remember that this film came out around the same time as Adrian Brody's 'The Jacket'. The themes of both films are remarkably similar - a tortured individual is increasingly plagued by bizarre intrusions into his everyday reality, with both he and the viewer desperately trying to ascertain if what he is experiencing is real or merely a descent into madness, scrambling for clues in a dense thicket of intimations, references and flashbacks to the characters past.
I enjoyed 'The Jacket', but found this to be a notch higher in the mind-bending rankings, firstly because all the loose strands were tied up at the end, and secondly, because of a quite outstanding and intense performance from the unnervingly gaunt Christian Bale. The unbearable responsibility of self-judgement played out in a contemporary and real yet disturbingly soulless backdrop, turns this film into one of the best adaptations yet of a novel that Kafka never wrote, and that's the kind of accolade that Bale's sacrifice to his art surely merits.
