Movie Reviews of The Love Letter

Movie Review: 3.5 Stars..decent but big departures from original story.
Summary: 3 Stars

This is a admirable film, and I enjoyed it. The acting is well done, the characters well written. However, IF you have read the original short story this movie takes serious departures and really is only inspired by the original.
Some minor spoilers ahead:

In the original it is really just a tale of the guy finding the desk and three letters. You never see the story from the perspective of the young woman and there aren't any extra characters except I think his mother.
In the film you get both perspectives, there is a fiance for the modern man as well as two different suitors for the young woman. Many letters are exchanged and photos as well. The ending is also completely different going for the obvious and cliched touch. This isn't neccessarily bad just not surprising since the original tale ends rather sadly and I'm sure they wanted a happier ending...
So there it is a good TV movie, not too amazing but very sweet and loosly based on Finney's lovely poiniant short story.

Movie Review: Sub-par
Summary: 3 Stars

I normally like romantic movies and this one sounded good, but it was lackluster and unmemorable. I see the similarities to Somewhere in Time, as another reviewer mentioned, but the other movie is FAR superior. Buy Somewhere in Time or something based on a Jane Austen book instead of this if you're looking for a good old-fashioned type romance.

Movie Review: Not same class as "Somewhere In Time"
Summary: 2 Stars

I stumbled upon this as I searched for a copy of "Somewhere in Time". The outstanding 5-star reviews led me to order it, even though it was comparatively expensive. What a sucker. Made for TV, this movie just doesn't ever allow the suspension of disbelief. The dialogue is weak, the acting forced and unconvincing and the technical aspects just silly (like the soap-opera recovery from prolonged traumatic coma). No music. No magic. Rent if you must (if you can find it) but save your money.

Movie Review: bad stuff
Summary: 1 Stars

I wrote a review for this movie and it disappeared. I would like to know why, but I'll try again.

I did not like this movie. I love Jack Finney and he would not approve of this movie. Here is this guy who is a few weeks away from getting married and he is writing love letters to a ghost. What does this say about him? I saw nothing in her letter that should have made him fall in love with her. I felt the whole thing was bogus, the guy was a cheat to his fiance and he dumped her with no tears or emotion. The fiance was clearly in love with him, but was probably lucky he dumped her. He seemed deranged, even to his mother. I didn't feel it was romantic at all and I love romantic movies (especially "magic of ordinary days"). ...and who was the girl he met in the cemetary? ...an illegitimate daughter of the girl with the desk? If so, wasn't she his own great, great granddaughter? forget buying this. watch "Lake House" instead. It's a much better time travel movie.
