Movie Reviews of The Lost Boys

Movie Review: And there is this super-shiny guy . . .
Summary: 5 Stars

When I first started teaching horror film four years ago, I quickly learned one lesson: my students born after 1986 hate this film. And I simply could not understand why ... it does not contain the deep homoerotic sensuality of Jordan's (Rice's) "Interview with the Vampire," it does not have the uber-stylized cinematography of Scott's (Strieber's) "The Hunger," and it does not have the frequently misunderstood black-humor of Bierman's "Vampire's Kiss." So why such resistance? I'll tell you why . . . that super-shiny, muscle-bound, shirtless guy playing the sax off the boardwalk (during the musical sequence when Star and Michael lock eyes). No joke. And, now, I can almost see why everything after that very moment is destroyed for them ... Luckily, I was born before 1986: and I love this film!

Opening with Echo and the Bunnymen's cover of "People are Strange," the films sets an immediate tone: Santa Carla is an odd little city;) But how "odd" is yet to be discovered ...

The antics of Frog Brothers (Corey Feldman and Jamison Newlander) easily translate as hysterical even today (twenty years later!!) I mean, to challenge the forces of the supernatural with logic gleaned from comic-books? Very funny! And to be surprised when it doesn't work? Even funnier!!

The soundtrack (to me) is as appealing as ever. The casting is fantastic!! Let me just be honest, this is how I know Kiefer Sutherland ... not as Jack Bauer but as David the Vampire (and, seriously, I'm just waiting for the day that Jack is revealed to be David .. keep your fingers crossed!!)

I'm not a fan of "slayer" films per say ... I like my vampires alive (well undead) and biting. But, even I must admit, this film has it all: eroticism, blood & gore, comedy, a devil-dog (not the yummy kind, unless you are into that) and a really shiny guy playing a sax!

Just buy it already!!

Movie Review: Is it true that Santa Clara is the Muder Capitol of the World?
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been a fan of this film since I was seven-years-old and I watched it with my sister one night on television. Its just one of those seminal 80s movies that everyone should see once in their life (weither they love it or not), just like `The Goonies' and `Sixteen Candles.' And despite the cheese factor, I still love the movie even today. There is just something about it that makes engrossing me and has me watching it every time I come across the movie.

And, funny enough a couple years ago when I was sorting through my college acceptance letters, doing research on the several schools that accepted me, I realized that one of the school was UC Santa Cruz (the movie was filmed in Santa Cruz and the town in the film is based on the town of Santa Cruz), and it was because of this that I visited, and then fell in love with the town, and thus decided to attend the school. I didn't come here because the movie was filmed here, but the movie did help me make a decision to go visit the school. And let me tell you it's a little creepy walking around that boardwalk amusement park at night.

But anyway, if you looking for a semi-spooky, camping/cheesy/adventurous/entertaining movie, `the lost boys' is a very good choice. It stars Diane Wiest (`Parenthood'), Jason Patrick , Corey Haim, Corey Feldman (`The Goonies'), Jamie Gertz (`Less than Zero'), and Edward Herman (TV's `Gilmore Girls'). The `special DVD' version contains a Commentary by the director (which is interesting, but most of what he says describes the plot and framing of the shots) and several retrospective featurettes which are pretty much strictly for fans of the movie.

Movie Review: Definitely one of the better vampire movies out there.
Summary: 5 Stars

A typical 80's "cheese" film. It follows all the guidelines of the 80's comedy-horror genre to the last dot and stands out perfectly. It is one of my all time favorite films, (not only due to the fact it has Keifer Sutherland in, mainly because it is so cheesy.) It's certainly much better than all the teen movies made nowadays. It was a movie ahead of it's time. Compare Lost Boys with all the similar movies like Fright Night, Interview with the Vampire, Near Dark. You'll notice how modern this movie was for the time it was played on the theaters.

Movie Review: No two vampires die the same !
Summary: 4 Stars

Filmed in my home town ... Santa Cruz ! This movie rocks.. its of course a cheesy vamp film ... but all I say to that is " more wine please .. ! "

Movie Review: A classic !
Summary: 5 Stars

I loved this movie when it first was released and still enjoy it to this day ! A true classic for everyone.
