Movie Reviews of The Lord of the RingsMovie Review: Very entertaining Summary: 5 Stars
As someone who hadn't seen this animated film until after Peter Jackson's trilogy, I still found it to be very entertaining.
Of course it pales in comparison to the live-action version, but then again, I think it's better to just not even compare them, and simply enjoy the differences.
Adapting any book to the film medium is a difficult undertaking, and what we see here is an admirable attempt.
The artwork is at best beautiful and visually stunning, at worst jarring and just strange. You will definitely enjoy it if you are interested in animation in film, as we see on display here some truly interesting techniques, such as blending in live action, which you will see doesn't always work very well.
A very worthwhile purchase. Recommended!
Movie Review: The Best Movie Ever Summary: 5 Stars
As an avid Tolkien fan I must say that this DVD was truly the best rendition of Tolkien's work ever. All of the character's were exactly as I pictured them and the music and artwork was magnificent. While watching the movie one can see that a lot of time and effort went into this film and one never tires of watching it. On the DVD the picture is much clearer and the scenes of the black riders send spine tingling chills up your back even more so than they did on the VHS. It almost feels as if you are on that horrible flight to the ford with Frodo the picture is so clear. I think that all people, fans and new fans alike should at least watch this DVD once and from then on it will probably be the only one in your DVD player because it is so awesome.
Movie Review: Blast from the past Summary: 5 Stars
I have been trying to get my hands on this film for a few years now, as it wasn't released on VHS in England. Even though it is an extremely shabby representation of the book, watching it as a child turned me on to Tolkien and reading books in general.I think I like the film so much because of the childhood memories that it evokes and watching it now makes me laugh (why on earth is Saruman called Aruman in the film?).The musical score is absolutely fantastic and well worth buying on CD but I was a bit disapointed by the complete lack of extras on the DVD. I don't think the new generation of Tolkien fans will appreciate the film at all if they have seen Peter Jacsons' effort, but as a nice trip down memory lane it's well worth the money.
Movie Review: Magical...with beautiful animation Summary: 5 Stars
The rotoscoping (tracing over live-action) looks great in this film, and makes the Wringwraiths look even more ominous. I saw this when I was a kid (and just re-watched it), and it was the rotoscoping that I remember most. Ironically, it was the rotoscoping that is criticized the most in this film, a seeming consensus among most of the like-minded reviewers out there. People that can think for themselves without consensus opinion will enjoy the great animation, which is beautiful in both the classic and roto-scoped styles.
Otherwise, the score is great, as are the voice-overs. Caution to parents: this looks like a cartoon, but has a few dagger assasinations and battle scenes that are fairly violent.
Movie Review: Lord of the rings Summary: 5 Stars
Even though this movie does not tell the whole story it does give you are real taste of Tolkiens world. Great animation style is used by Bakshi, music by Leonard Roseman & the voices of the fellowship of the ring are from some of the best actors ie: John Hurt & Peter Woodthorpe as Gollum you will never forget his voice acting it haughted me since my childhood. A great movie for any true fan of "The Lord of the Rings". Also there are animated movies of "The Hobbit" & "The Return of the King" both are very good but they are done in a different style then Bakshi great movie. Have fun & may the Hair on your feet never fall out.
