Movie Reviews of The Lord of the Rings

Movie Review: A Singular View of the Classic Story
Summary: 5 Stars

I am a *huge* Tolkien fan and avidly look into any interpretations I can find of the stories. True, none can be "right on" - the books were amazing, and a movie format is necessarily going to be shorter and limited in scope.

This feature is great in that it introduced thousands of people to a story they had not yet heard of, and intrigued them enough to learn more about it. It begins with Frodo and Gandalf, and goes up through about half of the story, ending with Gandalf beating the Orcs. The dialogue is excellent and the music truly compelling. Does the mix of animation and live action work? It's very interesting, at least, and does create some good scenes at times.

The story itself is sort of choppy, being squashed as it is into such a short time. True, it's not a work of art in itself. However, as a key piece of what has kept people interested in this fantastic story for so long, it's a must-have for anyone who loves the Tolkien works, and who is eagerly awaiting the Christmas release of the new movie!

Movie Review: Breath Taking
Summary: 5 Stars

Ever since i was shown the film by my father, about 12 years. i entered into a world that i had only seen in my dreams. I am now 18 and awaiting the release of Peter Jacksons version.

I first saw this film, I was in a dream state just amazed at what was going on, I found the story so interesting. I was also scared by it, but it did'nt stop me. Since seeing the film, i have read the Trilogy, The Hobitt, And some of the follow up books about the history behind the tale.

I have tried to get a copy of this film on VHS, but was unable due to it being a deleted video. It was only about six months ago that i finally tracked down a copy. Unfortunatly it was badly worn, it did'nt stop me. Once again i was in or, sucked into the intensity of the story.

Any fathers out there, should really show this film to their sons or daughters. Now this DVD is coming it is all starting again, this will be a great lead up for the release to this Christmas's Blockbuster.

Movie Review: Classic
Summary: 5 Stars

Most of us are old enough to remember this as a child. I was young enough to be impressed with it all & it inspired me to read Tolkien as I got older. When the movies were announced to be shown on television my brother & I anxiously waited.

Now I have been able to share that with my daughter. It is still enchanting & the best part is that there are no commercials to sit through. A much better copy than what we recorded from the television so many years ago.

Granted it has the stylings & sound quality of any movie around that era, but that should be expected. I was very pleased that since we purchased this my daughter has watched it over & over again & is now trying to read The Hobbit, trying to catch what all was left out.

Anxiously awaiting the release of the Live Action version.

Movie Review: Pre-release comments
Summary: 5 Stars

The Lord of the Rings DVD will be a re-release of the 1978 animated film. While the film covered only the first half of the Lord of the Rings novels, it does have several wonderful points. Firstly, it is one of the truest adaptions ever done. While some of it was changed to accomidate time constraints - it is already two hours long - it keeps closely to the novels, and presents the characters and story as they were intended.

Lastly, the animation used in the film is spectacular. They shot a live action reference film and literally animated it frame by frame. It was the most ambitious animated project ever attempted before computer animation became prevalent. Even with today's computer imagery, the smooth motion from frame to frame in this film is something else.

I can't wait for it to be released again!

Movie Review: Chill out people. This film deserves credit.
Summary: 5 Stars

I love this cartoon. So many reviewers poking holes into it: Rotoscoping, gaps in the plot, incorrect name pronounciation, bad animation...blah, blah, blah...
I think they forget, it's a CARTOON MADE IN 1978. No enormous budget, live action, No computerized animation, no big flashy production here. But for a low budget cartoon from over 25 years ago, it's really quite amazing.
I see some reviewers did realize this, but many others mercilessly trashed it and picked it apart. The parts of the story that the film does cover, is VERY true to the book. Word for word in fact. I also think the rotoscoping gives a very cool and creepy effect for the orcs and the ring wraiths. Besides, as far as the animation goes, it beats the hell out of today's stupid looking anime any day. That's my opinion.
