Movie Reviews of The Lord of the Rings

Movie Review: Great for it's time, and the studio ripped Bakshi off.
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie was my first introduction to the Lord of the Rings. How about that? Even before I had read the book, when I was just a young lad, I watched this movie on video with my uncle some time in the early 80's. I was enthralled (wizards, magic and such) and loved every minute of it. Even as a child, I thought it ended rather ubruptly and with no discernable reason. I forgot about the Lord of the Rings for a while as baseball and skateboarding took over my life, but ran across the Hobbit in middle school and the rest is history. Now, as an avid Tolkien-junkie, I can still look back on this movie and cherish it. The DARK DARK tone is what does it for me. It captures the mood of the book so well. Arguments about animation techniques aside, Ralph did quite well with what he had to work with. I'm just sad the studio wouldn't let him put it out as 'part one' of a three-part series, which is what should have happened. The film even made $70? million past it's budget yet everybody still calls it a failure, why is that? Who dropped the ball here? He should have been given the go-ahead to make two more films. But even for a rushed job, it still plays off well. I look forward to picking up this DVD. But ONE QUESTION is burning my brain.

Movie Review: Ralph Bakshi's Lord of the Rings is a Cinematic God send
Summary: 5 Stars

For all those reviews that say Ralph Bakshi's movie was horrible, keep in mind that they said Peter Jackson's movie is accurate to the books. This is not so, but that is not what i am writing about. Ralph Bakshi made a movie that was so on par with the books that you could read the book as you watch the movie. The rotoscoping was a thing of pure genious, as it mixes up animation styles. Also, many of you said that Rankin Bass' "The Hobbit" was good, what is wrong with you. Why are the orcs no taller than the hobbits, at least Bakshi's has them the correct color and size. Yeah, orcs are black, not green or brown like peter jackson's. The reason that Bakshi could not finish the Lord of the Rings is because he lost the rights to it, so stop all your wining. Remember this, if Bakshi had been allowed to finish The Lord of the Rings, we would not have the monstrosity of Rankin-Bass' Return of the King, come on Frodo of the Nine fingers and the ring of DOOOOOOOM! There is no singing in the return of the king, but there is more than peter jackson's movie which ends at the coronation with the fellowship parted. There was an entire book left out, so complain about his before you complain about a movie made in 1978!

Movie Review: Everyone has a vision
Summary: 5 Stars

It never ceases to be a subject of vexation for me the way this wonderful movie has been roundly dissed by avid "fans" of Tolkien. While it is true that everyone has their own vision of Middle Earth, it seems this vision makes some people feel entitled to mock the visions others hold. For me, this movie was life altering. I saw it when I was just a wee little thing, three years old. It made such an indelible impression on my mind that I incessantly harassed my parents to read the books to me from that day until they finally capitulated when I was seven, judging me old enough to understand them. For me this movie represents Middle Earth very well. The movie is DARK. It is HEAVY. It is not cute. It is not fuzzy. As for the rotoscoping that seems to horrify so many people, I must say, I think it was fabulous. I loved the surreal effect this had on the orcs. Frankly, this is how I will always see them; black and greenish brown and unearthly. This is my Middle Earth. Honestly, I think the atmosphere this movie creates is closer to reality than any other representation of Tolkien's works. I loved this movie, and have hunted for it for years, when it was out of print. FRODO LIVES!

Movie Review: Great!
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm gonna make this short. I know a lot of people don't like this movie because it was completely overshadowed by the Peter Jackson film. I find it weird that a lot of people enjoy the animated versions of "The Hobbit" and "The Return of the King." This film is much better and the animation IS NOT BAD. If you have never read the book and have seen the Peter Jackson film, I would have to tell you to not watch this movie. It's more based on the J. R. R. Tolkien novel. A lot of people also complain about how the information from the novel is crammed tight into this film and that it leaves out a lot of details. You have to keep in mind that back then, movies were a maximum of two hours long, which this film is. Also, the Peter Jackson movies are divided into the three parts of the book, "The Fellowship of the Ring," "The Two Towers, " and "The Return of the King" and this film has TWO of the parts in it. To wrap it up, please don't include this film in the same series as "The Hobbit" and "The Return of the King" because it's not created by the same people. This film is very bad and the others make it look bad.

Movie Review: Apples and Oragnes.
Summary: 5 Stars

You'll either love this movie or hate it.

I see that most of the reviews are comparisons to the movie release of LOTR. Nothing could be worse. These are two totaly diffrent mediums, and should be represented as such.

My only dissapointment with the DVD release is the end. Instead of the voice of Aragorn saying "Here ends the first part of the war of the ring." We get some announcer trying to wrap up the movie. Bad move. That just makes the ending bad.

On the flip side, the Gamma correction is nice. It brings out the background drawings almost to a fault. In some scenes you can almost make out a "matte" appearence on the screen. You can see it mostly when we first meet a ring wraith on the road. But over all it's good. Pay particular attention when Gandolf and Frodo are talking about the ring in the beginning. The background and sky are vivid and quite striking.

I first saw this movie when I was 18. I loved it then and I love it now. I love the atmosphere that Ralph Bakshi produces, and I love the scenery. I'll never put this in the back of my library. Ever.
