Movie Reviews of The Longest Day (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)Movie Review: Don't Bother Summary: 1 StarsI bought this DVD and several others as Christmas gifts for my husband. He finally sat down to watch it tonight and I wish he hadn't. The DVD cuts out just before the final chapter and freezes the playback. This turned what I had hoped to be a thoughtful gift for a fan of WWII films into a very bad experience for us both. There has to be a more well manufactured version out there. My advice is, look for it and avoid this one.
Movie Review: CLASSIC Summary: 5 StarsEverything thing that has been said in favor of this film I agree with. If you don't have it, get it.
Movie Review: Longest Day, The. Summary: 5 StarsA welcome addition to my Library. I live in The Armed Forces Retirement Home in DC. And lend them to the Library for viewing in our theatre. Many of the Residents, Vets, enjoy good solid movies of the Genre.
Movie Review: One of the best WWII films Summary: 5 StarsSuperior to its closest companion, Saving Private Ryan, The Longest Day defines epic war film. Unfortunately, SPR gets much of its attention from its horror movie level of gore and overdone camera tricks. Its story is just made up fiction, played out with a cast reduced to stereotypes, with no mention of the overall Allied effort that made D-Day happen.
The Longest Day, however, is a triumph. Its cast is too huge to list, and comes from an era when film actors were more watchable, complementing a film's story rather than competing with it. Half the fun is spotting the many cameos among all the actors and extras in the film's bigger scenes.
Though three hours in length, it is well worth every minute, and does not cheat the viewer. With a pace appropriate to the storyline, at times it might dull some of today's moviegoers who were raised on high octane blockbusters, but it nonetheless works to build up the many complexities and sides of D-Day, giving viewers a well rounded experience with some spectacular payoffs in onscreen action and drama.
If you have already seen SPR, then this should practically be required viewing. If you haven't seen SPR, then see this first -- you won't be disappointed!
Movie Review: Only Color will do Summary: 3 StarsI refuse to buy this b/w version of the movie, they should also be offering it in the beautiful color version that came out a couple years ago on VHS. I would happily and gladly buy a color widescreen version of this movie, that's the way it should be released. Till then, no dice, I'll transfer my color VHS tape to DVD and enjoy that until they release the official DVD version in color. COLOR OR NOTHING, that's my motto.
