Movie Review: The Long Riders Summary: 5 StarsGreat video. I've been looking for this one for quite some time. Three sets of brothers plays three sets of brothers about the the days of the James gang right after the civil war. I'm glad to add this to my collection of western classics.
Movie Review: A Western the way they used to make them.! Summary: 5 Stars
I have been watching Westerns ever since I was a kid, in the 1940's
That was after the time of Tom Mix and his era;but at the height of The Durango Kid ,Roy Rogers and Gene Autry. At that time we separated out the Westerns from Rogers and Autry, which we called Cowboy movies. They were the ones with yodelling, singing ,sweethearts, cattle rustlers, riding the trails and roping the steers. What I preferred was the era of the Gunfighters,Indian Battles, train robberies, Old West characters and lots of fast-action and shoot-outs in the saloons, canyons and the deserts.
This movie was produced in 1958;,hey that's nearly 50 years ago.I am not sure if I've ever seen it before, but it was so well made and with so excellent actors, scenery, color and music, the fact that it is still being sold today;attests to its high quality. I guess if any Western can be called a Classic;this must certainly fit the bill.
Anyone who reads about the Old West, and all that goes with it,knows about Frank and Jesse James,The Youngers,The Millers,Charlie and Bob Ford ,Belle Starr and all; have heard the stories in many different versions.Sure there was a lot of embellishments;but after all this is entertainment and never intended to be dry, factual history. I guess if that is one's preference;maybe one should go to the history books, newspaper accounts and court records;but even then you'll never know what really happened, nor why. However;for great entertainment you can't beat a well made Western movie;like this one,for example.
My favourite part in the movie was the Saloon Fight between Cole Younger and the Half-Breed,each holding the end of a strap in their mouth, and using Arkansas Toothpicks for weapons. This is a Western;sitting around a campfire, singing about little doggies and sunsets is a Cowboy moie.Nothing wrong with that;to each his own.
Several years ago,I visited the museum ,outside St Louis where Jesse was shot by Bob Ford.It gives one a real chill to stand in that very spot.
Movie Review: Very enjoyable film.... Summary: 4 StarsI am partial to a good western and this sure fits the bill. I am not a history buff of the west and I don't know of the accuracy of this film. If most films were historically accurate they would probably be somewhat boring. A good example is the OK Coral. I was entertained. I own the DVD and will watch it whenever I want to see a good western. I also concentrate on different parts of the film with each viewing.
Movie Review: Hill almost elevates cinema violence into an art form... Summary: 4 StarsAs Sam Peckinpah's 'The Getaway,' Walter Hill's 'The Long Riders' almost elevates cinema violence into an art form...
Visually, 'The Long Riders' contains much that is stunning, even mesmerizing: the green Missouri scenic landscapes; the train robbery sequence; the stagecoach heist; the crossing of a wild river; but there is no question that it is the scene of the gang's disastrous foray into Northfield, Minnesota - that highlight this film... These specific episodes give 'The Long Riders' its rhythm, power, spectacle, and excitement...
With his slow motion 'terror shootout,' Hill seems to impress his viewers by showing them an inventive montage of high-level gory violence... But Hill's most wonderful sequences are those that were the most reserved: the wonderful moment when Frank is cutting the hardest wood with a forest ax and his brother Jesse, walking with his fianc?e, attempting to settle down and raise a family...
Hill may have a reputation for being a tough guy, but his best screen moments (in "Hard Times", "The Warriors", "Streets of Fire") are the ones in which he allows his romantic tendencies to slip through, when he gives his characters the dignity that means so much to them... Hill tries to debunk the American myth that Western gunfighters were "heroes," and to show these embittered guys for the 'rough men that they really were.'
Hill's real intention is to present us with a gang of four families of brothers, and get us to accept them on their own terms, in their own brutal world... The men of 'The Long Riders' are at their most dastardly at the beginning of the film when Ed Miller (Dennis Quaid) indiscriminately shoots an innocent clerk, but for the rest of the film - one by one - Hill reveals their better, more 'human' sides... We further get to appreciate them as we compare them to the awful men around them; next to the Pinkertons killing a simple-minded 15 year old boy, they come out best, the 'good guys.'
To Hill, good and bad aren't on opposite sides of the coin; they share the edge...
