Movie Reviews of The Living End

Movie Review: Pea-Brains' Big Adventure
Summary: 1 Stars

Early on in the film, one of the anti-heros goes into a parking garage and writes on a pillar "Society is responsible". And that's the point of this mixture of nihilism, self-pity, and stupidity. Mostly, it's a series of bizarre, phony scenes filled with nutty, unpleasant people. The story becomes a road movie, when two HIV positive gay men go on the lam after one claims to shoot a cop (the scene is never shown). While on the road, they commit some boring crimes, engage in unsexy sex scenes, speak gibberish, and act like fools. The aggressive one appears to go crazy, while the other one gets sick, but no one gives you a reason to care. Not one character in this putrid mess displays the ability to think and act logically. Clearly, this film is (un)inspired by "Thelma & Louise", but without the charismatic leads, well-written characters, interesting story, or technical competence. The only person in this film who displays any talent is actress Mary Woronov, a veteran of trashy films. In her role as a flirty lesbian, and she displays a combination of malice and comic irony that outshines her dialogue. But she's only on screen for a few minutes. The rest of the actors appear to be amatuers, as do the photographers, sound crew, and director. As for the two leads: Mike Dytri talks like he's reading from cue cards and doesn't understand the lauguage, while Craig Gilmore seems to be bored or hung over. And the appearant message about HIV (take no responsibility for your life and disregard everyone around you)is not only dumb, but offensive. This film does a better job at portraying gays in a negative light than anything Jerry Falwell has said, which is why the positive reviews floor me. Those who rent this movie are proceeding at their own risk.

Movie Review: Araki's touching masterpiece -- on DVD at last!
Summary: 5 Stars

Probably the greatest -- certainly the angriest and funniest -- film ever made about HIV+ young men. It is 'dedicated' to a Republican government (George I) that cares nothing for its citizens with AIDS.

"The Living End" is a remarkable love story. It begins with Jon (Craig Gilmore) being rather glibly told that he is HIV+. A mild-mannered film critic who never rocked the boat, Jon is dazed and confused. Just as he is wondering what he will do next, Jon meets Luke (perfectly played by Mike Dytri), a stunningly handsome trouble-magnet (and the sweetest hunk you'll ever see) who is on the lam. Their lives are changed forever. With a super-heated film chemistry, Jon and Luke fall in love. With nothing to lose, they set out on a darkly comic and violent crime spree -- Thelma and Louise with a twist. The world around them is dangerous, and the road of love is rocky: they fight, break up, make up, make love, but find that, in the end, they still have each other. Theirs is, quite simply, one of the most gut-wrenching and genuine love stories ever filmed.

This release is basically a DVD copy of the tape, but a good one. This film masterpiece deserves a first class Criterion remastering. But, until that happens, I am grateful to Platinum Disc for bringing it out on DVD, at long last. You will not be left unscathed, or untouched, by Araki's powerful, moving story of Jon and the beautiful Luke.

Movie Review: Very low-budget and a bit out-dated
Summary: 3 Stars

It's hard to believe this film is only ten years old, because it seems a bit tame by today's standards, compared to how it was perceived when it was released. The film is shot on an almost non-existent budget, the acting is weak, and the chemistry between the two protagonists is not the strongest. Still, it has its moments, telling the story of two HIV-positive men who have nothing to lose, literally, including their lives. As with most low-budget, independent films, it takes a lot of patience to get through some of the quirks, and perhaps a few viewings to appreciate what is really going on.

Movie Review: Hey Brian, lets learn to spell.
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie rocks. It is also ashame that people can't stand seeing realily and have a deep seated need for gloss. Or maybe their homophobia is showing????

Movie Review: BUBBLEGUM SCREENPLAY, SUGARLESS DIALOGUE, AND LOW IN PHAT.
Summary: 1 Stars

IF THIS IS INDEPENDENT FILMMAKING, I'LL TAKE HOLLYWOOD GLOSS ANYDAY. I'D RATHER FLUSH A TOILET 1000 TIMES IN A ROW AND WATCH THE WATER SPIRAL DOWN INTO THE PIPES. I WOULD HAVE CLICK'D THAT "I OWN IT" BUTTON BEFORE REVIEWING, BUT I THREW THIS JUNK IN THE TRASH WHERE IT BELONGS. WORDS COULD DISCRIBE HOW POORLY THIS WAS PUT TOGETHER. BUT I THINK I'VE WASTED ENOUGH TIME. IT'S A SAD STATE OF AFFAIRS.
