Movie Reviews of The Little Shop of Horrors

Movie Review: A brilliant musical horror comedy!
Summary: 5 Stars

In the early 60's in the grimiest part of New York City, Plant shop owner Mushnik (Vincient Gardenia) and worker Seymore Krelborne (Rick Moranis) are having bad business with their store. However during one day when Seymore was looking for unusual and weird plants while during an esclipse of the sun, he discovers a strange venus-flytrap at a Chinese plant shop and buys it. With the plant being the main attraction of the store, the flower shop becomes very successful on Skid Row for Seymore and he falls for a girl named Audrey (Ellen Green) who has been physically abused by her mean and insane dentist boyfriend (Steve Martin). The plant nicknamed Audrey II (Voiced by Levi Stubbs) is actually a man-eating alien plant creature from space that wants to make Seymore's wishes and successes come true if he can dismember some people.

Featuring appearences by Jim Belushi, Bill Murray and Christopher Guest this is a marvleous musical horror Sci-fi comedy extraganza. Based on a successful broadway musical from Alan Menken and Howard Ashman which was inspired by a cult 1960 Sci-fi horror comedy cheapie flick, director Frank Oz really captures the spirit of both the broadway play and the Roger Corman classic in every way. The performances by the cast are just outstanding including the musical numbers which are very memorable, the Audrey II effects still hold up today as they are just amazing especially the lip synching of the creature.

This DVD has great picture and sound with cool extras like audio commentary, deleted scenes and outtakes, Info facts behind the movie, cast and crew info, Trailers, TV Spots and behind the scenes documentary.

Movie Review: It Came From the Eclipse
Summary: 2 Stars

Things are not going well at Mr. Mushnik's (Vincent Gardenia) flower shop. He has had no customers for the longest time. In fact, he can hardly afford to keep paying his two employees, plant nerd Seymour Krelborn (Rick Moranis) and cashier Audrey (Ellen Greene). Seymour, meanwhile, has a crush on Audrey, but she is currently dating a sadistic dentist named Orin (Steve Martin).

Everything changes after an unexpected eclipse of the sun. Seymour finds an unusual plant. Naming it Audrey II (voiced by Levi Stubbs but played by a series of puppets), he places it in the shop window. Almost immediately, it starts to draw in customers.

However, Seymour discovers a serious problem. It requires human blood to live. And the more he feeds it, the more it starts to grow. What will happen when the blood from a cut finger no longer satisfies Audrey II?

I had long heard of this musical and always been curious about it. Fortunately, I got to see it for free. The story was just too strange for me. I know it was supposed to be funny, but I didn't really find anything to laugh about. I will say the acting was great, especially Steve Martin as a wanna be Elvis (with black hair even). The songs were pretty good and catchy as well.

But the story! I could never find anyone to truly root for. As a result, it became an exercise in waiting to see how things would unfold. And as I said, I found parts of it painful instead of funny, especially most of the scenes with Steve Martin. (Yet his acting was great. Go figure.) I enjoy dark comedies, but this one was just too dark to find anything funny.

As much as I love musicals, this is one I won't be adding to my collection. Do yourself a favor and hurry on by before Audrey II gets you.

I have always loved this movie. I mean what is better than a musical about a man eating plant. And the fact that the bad guy get punished for beating the girl by being fed to the plant.... Priceless.

Movie Review: As good as I remembered
Summary: 5 Stars

I remembered this movie from ages ago!!! Just had to see it again and I wasn't disappointed !!! The 80's had the best movies and this is one of them!

Movie Review: I told my dentist, it is my favorite dentist movie, ever!
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie is strange. It reminds me of another strange one called "Rocky Horror Show". Both of them are cult classics. "Little Shop" is deliciously funny and entertaining. One of those movies that I enjoy seeing again and again. It is old that even if they do not have the modern special effects for a monster film, still it can stand on its own. Yes, it is a musical. Although nothing is exceptionally catchy, Steve Martin's song is unforgettable. Steve Martin makes root canal sounds fun.

The plot? It is about this strange plant who eats human. It gets bigger and hungrier every meal. A love triangle between Seymour (Rick Moranis), Audrey (Ellen Greene) and Orin (Steve Martin). Seymour is desperately in love with Audrey, but she's taken. Orin in turn is the sadistic dentist and leather-clad biker type boyfriend of Seymour. In the end, somebody dies. ...Well, forget about the plot. Just watch it - Because it's FUN! Definitely a must-have for my movie collection.
