Movie Review: "Supper Time!" Summary: 5 StarsThis excellently rendered film version of the quirky Broadway musical can be enjoyed even by people who are not usually fans of the genre. Like the recent HAIRSPRAY the setting is the early 60's and the two films also share the rather unique fact that they are filmed versions of Broadway musicals that were inspired by non musical films. Rick Moranis is perfect as nerdy Seymour who finds fame and fortune when the the plant he cultivates - Audrey II - grows in to a media sensation but not without a few complications. Ellen Greene is great as Seymour's blond love interest (the original Audrey) who is looking for a nice guy like Seymour but doesn't think she deserves one. Vincent Gardenia is the other lead playing Mr. Mushnik the owner of Skid Row Florists and Audrey and Seymour's boss. Steve Martin creates Audrey's sadistic dentist boyfriend unforgettably. Smaller cameo roles are played by Christopher Guest, John Candy, Jim Belushi and most memorably Bill Murray.
I've never seen the original 1960's film but I understand it has a dark ending similar to the stage version which I have seen. Though this film concludes in a lighthearted manner it is not without a suitably ominous final touch.
Movie Review: Little Shop of Horrors Summary: 3 StarsPurchased this item directly from Amazon. The movie plays good when you play from beginning to end. However, if you try to select certain scenes from the main menu no volume plays on the scene. It's kind of messed up if you have to stop the movie at a certain part then come back later to watch it, you can't just go to the part you stopped watching from you have to go all the way back to the beginning. Wasn't worth the hastle of sending back and getting a refund so I just kept it.
Movie Review: An Unsung Gem Summary: 5 StarsThis little gem of a musical cannot be recommended more. It stars Rick Moranis as geeky Seymour, a guy whose totally in love with his sweet co-worker Audrey. However, she is in a relationship with an abusive dentist. When a talking plant appears from outer space though, things have got to change for the better, right? An astonishingly original concept - which was actually borrowed from the horror original by Roger Corman, with an early appearance by Jack Nicholson - is brought to life by Frank Oz, director of The Dark Crystal and Bowfinger, also starring Steve Martin. The songs are outstanding and are performed with much gusto by the leading actors, particularly Ellen Greene, who reprises the role of Audrey which she played in the stage version. The film was not a huge success when it was first released, but has rightly established a cult following since then. Long may it continue!
Movie Review: Classic Nicholson Summary: 4 StarsI bought this movie for my dad and he loved it. We both love Jack Nicholson and this was another outstanding performance by him. This is a truly remarkable film with lots of dark humor.
